James C. And Mary A. Costello House
The James C. and Mary A. Costello House is a historic building located in the Irvington neighborhood Portland, Oregon, United States. Built in 1910, it is an excellent example of the work of prominent architect Joseph Jacobberger at the height of the Arts and Crafts style in Portland residential architecture. During his prolific career Jacobberger contributed greatly to the spread of that style in Portland. James C. Costello was a developer who helped shape Irvington, and chose to locate his own home there.. The house was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.. Joseph Jacobberger
Joseph Jacobberger (March 19, 1869March 18, 1930) was an American architect based in Portland, Oregon. He partnered with Alfred H. Smith in the firm Jacobberger and Smith. Early life Jacobberger was born on March 19, 1869, in Lautenbach, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France to cousins Hubert Jacobberger and Josephine Jacobberger. The Jacobbergers immigrated to the United States in 1872.Jacobberger's obituary in ''The Oregonian'' stated that he was 62 years old at his death in 1930 and that his family immigrated when he was two years old. Another view is that his family immigrated in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War, and he died one day before his sixty-first birthday. However, the obituary contains other information that is undisputed. The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Hubert Jacobberger became a building contractor. Irvington is a neighborhood in the Northeast section of Portland, Oregon. According to the city's Office of Community and Civic Life, it consists of a rectangular area extending east to west from NE 7th Ave. to NE 26th Ave., and north to south from NE Fremont St. to NE Broadway. It borders the King, Sabin, and Alameda neighborhoods to the north; Alameda and Grant Park to the east; Sullivan's Gulch and the Lloyd District to the south; and Eliot to the west.
