James Benjamin Hooker
James Benjamin Hooker (May 1910 – September 6, 1984) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Notukeu-Willow Bunch from 1964 to 1971 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Liberal. He was born in Lafleche, Saskatchewan, the son of George W. Hooker, and was educated in Woodrow and in Regina. In 1937, Hooker married Joan Whitby. He farmed in the Lafleche area for 35 years. Hooker was a member of the town council for Lafleche, also serving as mayor from 1953 to 1962. He was also president of the Saskatchewan Curling Association and chairman of the Lafleche Union Hospital Board, and of the Lafleche Community Recreation Co-operative. Hooker was defeated by Allen Engel when he ran for reelection to the provincial assembly in 1971. Notukeu-Willow Bunch
Notukeu-Willow Bunch was a provincial electoral division for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, located south of Old Wives Lake. Centered on the town of Assiniboia, this constituency was created for the 8th Saskatchewan general election in 1938 by combining the districts of Notukeu and Willow Bunch. The constituency was dissolved and divided between the districts of Assiniboia-Gravelbourg and Bengough-Milestone before the 18th Saskatchewan general election in 1975. Legislative Assembly Of Saskatchewan
The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. Lafleche, Saskatchewan
Lafleche is a small town in southwest Saskatchewan, Canada in the Rural Municipality of Wood River No. 74. The community is located at the intersection of Highway 13 and Highway 58. It is 20 km south of Gravelbourg and 45 km west of Assiniboia. It is situated on the south bank of Lafleche Creek, which is a tributary of Wood River. Thomson Lake Regional Park is located 10 minutes north of town. History The village of Buffalo Head started to form one and a half miles east of the present townsite with the arrival of settlers in 1905. The name was changed to Lafleche in honour of Louis-François Richer Laflèche. Woodrow is an unincorporated community in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan approximately 6 miles west of Lafleche. This present day agricultural area was once the hub of the local area with lumber yards, grain elevators, 3 churches and 3 or more general stores. Allen Engel
Allen Willard Engel (born October 20, 1932) is a farmer and former political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Notukeu-Willow Bunch from 1971 to 1975 and Assiniboia-Gravelbourg from 1978 to 1986 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, the son of Emil Engel. Engel studied at the Saskatchewan Teacher's College and taught school for several years. In 1955, he married Joyce Beverly Baumbach of Lodi, California. Engel ran unsuccessfully in the newly created Assiniboia-Gravelbourg riding in 1975 before being elected again in 1978. Engel survived the Progressive Conservative landslide in 1982; Liberal leader Ralph Goodale was also running in the riding, turning the contest into a three-way race. Assiniboia (electoral District)
Assiniboia was a federal electoral district in Saskatchewan, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1908 to 1988. This riding was created in 1907 following the admission of Saskatchewan into the Canadian Confederation in 1905. The riding was located in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan until the 1949 election, when it was moved westward to be based around the community of Assiniboia. The riding's territory before and after the 1949 election did not overlap. Most of its pre-1949 territory was transferred to Moose Mountain with a small part being transferred to Qu'Appelle. Its new territory was carved out of parts of Wood Mountain and Weyburn.
