Jalda Rebling
Jalda Rebling (born 1951 in Amsterdam) is a German hazzan. A year after birth, she and her parents moved to East Germany in 1952. Her parents survived the Holocaust, and Rebling's mother and aunt, Janny Brandes-Brilleslijper, were the first to tell Otto Frank of his daughters' deaths. Her mother Rebekka Brilleslijper, also known as Lin Jaldati, was a well-known singer of Yiddish music while her father, Eberhard Rebling, was a musicologist. Her sister Kathinka Rebling is also a musicologist. In 1987 Rebling helped organize a Yiddish culture festival in Germany, which occurred every year into the 1990s. Rebling herself eventually became one of the best known Yiddish singers in united postwar Germany. She also acted in Yiddish at the Hackischer Hoftheater. Hazzan
A ''hazzan'' (; , lit. Hazan) or ''chazzan'' ( he, חַזָּן , plural ; Yiddish ''khazn''; Ladino ''Hasan'') is a Jewish musician or precentor trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the congregation in songful prayer. In English, this prayer leader is often referred to as a cantor, a term also used in Christianity. ''Sh'liaḥ tzibbur'' and the evolution of the hazzan The person leading the congregation in public prayers is called the '' sh'liaḥ tzibbur'' (Hebrew for "emissary of the congregation"). Jewish law restricts this role to adult Jews; among Orthodox Jews, it is restricted to males. The first openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clergy in Judaism were ordained as rabbis and/or cantors in the second half of the 20th century. History 20th century Allen Bennett became the first openly gay rabbi in the United States in 1978. Lionel Blue was the first British rabbi to publicly declare himself as gay, which he did in 1980. Admission to rabbinical seminary and ordination for openly LGBT people began in 1984, when the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, the seminary of Reconstructionist Judaism, voted to accept and ordain rabbis without regard to their sexual orientation.
