Arts De Seconde Rhétorique
The term ''la seconde rhétorique'' (French for "second rhetoric") came into use in the fifteenth century as a description of secular, vernacular verse in France. The term embodied these three characteristics in opposition to (i) ''la première rhétorique'', that is, prose; (ii) to writing in medieval Latin; and (iii) to the writings of the clergy (''clercs''). The earliest vernacular treatise on poetry in France was the prologue written by Guillaume de Machaut for publication of his complete works (1370s), but the earliest that is one of the traditional ''Arts de seconde rhétorique'' is ''L'art de dictier'' by Eustache Deschamps (1392). Jacques Legrand (philatelist)
Dr. Jacques Amable Legrand (29 August 1820 – 6 June 1912) was one of the first collectors of French stamps in the nineteenth century and one of the first organizers and scholars of philately in France as a serious topic of study. He used the pseudonym of Dr. Magnus. He participated actively in the journal ''Le Timbrophile'' and invented the perforation gauge, or odontometer, which has become a basic tool in determining the perforation of stamps. He also fought an unsuccessful battle to reject the title of the subject advocated by Georges Herpin and Arthur Maury as "philately" and sought it to be renamed "Timbrology". Jacques Legrand was one of the founders on 14 June 1875 of the Société Française de Timbrologie, one of the most important philatelic institutions in France, and served as its first secretary. Jacques Legrand (24 October 1906 – 30 June 1944) was a French Resistance leader and a chemical engineer at the Curie Institute in Paris. Pre-war life Legrand was born in Douai, France on 24 October 1906. He worked as a chemical engineer at the Curie Institute in Paris. Legrand was an avid amateur sailor in his spare time prior to the war. World War II Legrand joined the French Army in October 1939, following the outbreak of World War II. He served in an anti-aircraft battery during the Battle of France. Legrand was the co-founder of the Réseau Gloria along with Gabrielle Picabia and served as the leader of the network. Réseau Gloria operated during the German occupation of France during World War II with the primary task of gathering naval and maritime intelligence. The network was in touch with the British Secret Intelligence Service and with the Special Operations Executive (SOE).
