Jacques F. Benders
Jacobus Franciscus (Jacques) Benders (1 June 1924 – 9 January 2017) was a Dutch mathematician and Emeritus Professor of Operations Research at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He was the first Professor in the Netherlands in the field of Operations ResearchGerard Alberts en Jan Schut (1994). Biography Benders studied mathematics at the Utrecht University, where he later also received his PhD in 1960 with the thesis entitled "Partitioning in Mathematical Programming" under supervision of Hans Freudenthal. Late 1940s had started his career as statistician for the Rubber Foundation. In 1955 he moved to Shell laboratory in Amsterdam, where he researched mathematical programming problems concerning the logistics of oil refinery. A mathematician is someone who uses an extensive knowledge of mathematics in their work, typically to solve mathematical problems. EURO Gold Medal
The EURO Gold medal of the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO) is the highest distinction within Operations Research (OR) in Europe. The prize was first awarded to Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann in 1985. The medal is awarded at EURO-k Conferences, which usually take place twice every three years. It is granted to an individual or a group for an outstanding contribution to the field of Operations Research. The Prize is intended to reflect contributions that have stood the test of time, and hence it is awarded for a body of work, rather than a single piece. Jo Van Nunen
Johannes Arnoldus Elizabeth Emmanuel van Nunen (23 December 1945 – 12 May 2010) was a Dutch engineer, management consultant, and Professor of Logistics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, and expert in the field of logistics, Supply Chain Management and Operations Research. Biography Born in Venlo, Van Nunen studied Applied Mathematics at the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he received his MA in 1971. There in 1976 he also received his PhD under supervision of Jaap Wessels with a thesis entitled "Contracting Markov decision processes". After graduating in 1976, Van Nunen started his academic career in Eindhoven as associate professor. In 1978 he was visiting professor at North Carolina State University in the US for one year. Benders' Decomposition
Benders decomposition (or Benders' decomposition) is a technique in mathematical programming that allows the solution of very large linear programming problems that have a special block structure. This block structure often occurs in applications such as stochastic programming as the uncertainty is usually represented with scenarios. The technique is named after Jacques F. Benders. The strategy behind Benders decomposition can be summarized as ''divide-and-conquer''. That is, in Benders decomposition, the variables of the original problem are divided into two subsets so that a first-stage master problem is solved over the first set of variables, and the values for the second set of variables are determined in a second-stage subproblem for a given first-stage solution. An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where petroleum (crude oil) is transformed and refined into useful products such as gasoline (petrol), diesel fuel, asphalt base, fuel oils, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas and petroleum naphtha.
