Jacques Brown
Jacques Brown (first name pronounced "Jakes") (23 August 1900 – 3 April 1975) was a British radio producer. He produced ''Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh'', ''The Goon Show'', ''Beyond Our Ken'' and others for BBC Radio. He was born Solomon Jacob Brown in Toxteth Park, Liverpool. A trumpet player in his youth, he had many stories to tell of being a jobbing musician in London in the 1920s. He performed in a number of minor acting roles before becoming a producer. After retiring from the BBC to nurse his wife, who was seriously ill with cancer from which she later died, he helped his brother-in-law with his cake decorating business until his death, and the business folded after the postal workers strike of 1971. The 1971 United Kingdom postal workers strike was a strike in the United Kingdom staged by postal workers between January and March 1971. Details The strike was Britain's first national postal strike and began after postal workers demanded a pay rise of 15–20 per cent then walked out after Post Office managers made a lower offer. The strike began on 20 January and lasted for seven weeks, finally ending with an agreement on 4 March. After voting over the weekend, the strikers returned to work on 8 March. The strike overlapped with the introduction of decimal currency in the UK. ''Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh'' was a comedy show broadcast from 1944 to 1950 and 1951 to 1954 by BBC radio and in 1950–51 by Radio Luxembourg. It was written by and starred Richard Murdoch and Kenneth Horne as officers in a fictional RAF station coping with red tape and the inconveniences and incongruities of life in the Second World War. After the war the station became a country club and finally the show became the chronicle of a newspaper, ''The Weekly Bind''. Among the supporting cast were Sam Costa as the officers' batman, Maurice Denham in a multitude of roles, Diana Morrison, Dora Bryan and Nicholas Parsons.
