Jacobus Verheiden
Jacobus Verheiden (Verheidanus Graviensis) ( fl. 15901618) was a Dutch schoolmaster known as an author. Life He was the elder brother of William Verheiden (1568–1596) from Grave. They both attended the University of Leiden in 1590, and Jacobus was at Heidelberg in 1591. He became rector of the Latin school in Nijmegen. He was a friend of Thomas Bodley.Pol, p. 416. Verheiden was a delegate from the Synod of Gelderland to the Synod of Dort in 1618. Works The ''Praestantium aliquot theologorum'' (1602) consisted of 50 engraved portraits of Protestant theologians, with a few earlier figures (Berengar of Tours, John Wycliffe, Jan Hus, Jerome of Prague, Girolamo Savonarola and Erasmus) and a few laymen, for which Verheiden supplied Latin text, including biographical and bibliographical information. Henry Holland (1583–1650?) was an English bookseller and printer. Life Henry Holland, born at Coventry on 29 September 1583, was one of the ten children of the translator Philemon Holland and his wife Anne Bott (1555–1627). He came to London as a youth, and usually designated himself ''Londonopolitanus''. He was made free of the Stationers' Company on 5 December 1608. In 1613 he accompanied John Harington, 1st Baron Harington of Exton, whose family had been on friendly terms with his father, to the Electorate of the Palatinate, when Harington accompanied Elizabeth of Bohemia to the home of her husband, Frederick V, Elector Palatine. Holland's last days were spent in poverty. On 26 June 1647 was issued a broadsheet addressed appealing for charitable aid: it cited his anti-Catholic views and service in the life-guards of Basil Feilding, 2nd Earl of Denbigh in the English Civil War, and support from William Gouge amongst others. The painted frieze at the Bodleian Library, in Oxford, United Kingdom, is a series of 202 portrait heads in what is now the Upper Reading Room. It was made in 1619, and the choice of worthies to include was advanced for its time, featuring Copernicus and Paracelsus as well as Protestant reformers. Augustin Marlorat
Augustin Marlorat du Pasquier (Augustinus Marloratus) (1506-October 31, 1562) was a French Protestant reformer, executed on a treason charge. Life He was born at Bar-le-Duc about 1506. At the age of eight he was placed in an Augustinians, Augustinian monastery, where he took the vows and was ordained priest in 1524. Nine years later he was abbot of a monastery at Bourges, but, becoming indoctrinated with the principles of Protestantism, he left France in 1535 and took refuge in Geneva, where he worked as a proof-reader for Greek and Hebrew. At the recommendation of Pierre Viret he was appointed to a pastorate in Grissier near Lausanne, and there married. From Grissier he was called to Vevey, where he remained until 1559. The dismissal of Viret in the controversy on excommunication, however, led Marlorat, who approved the rigidly Calvinistic procedure, to resign, and after a brief time in Geneva he was sent in July to Paris as pastor of the Evangelical congregation there.
