Jacobs Institute For Design Innovation
The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation is a building on the campus of UC Berkeley, part of the UC Berkeley College of Engineering. Construction began in August 2014 with a $20 million gift from the Paul and Stacy Jacobs Foundation. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on August 20, 2015, with speeches from various UC Berkeley administrators, Ellen Lupton, Paul E. Jacobs, executive chairman of Qualcomm, and Jack McCauley. The building opened for instruction on September 16. The 24,000-square-foot building was constructed at a cost of $25 million, funded by philanthropy. Facilities The building includes a general purpose makerspace on the first floor, two classrooms on the second floor, and a large classroom and event space on the third floor. Ellen Lupton
Ellen Lupton (born 1963) is a graphic designer, curator, writer, critic, and educator. Known for her love of typography, Lupton is the Betty Cooke and William O. Steinmetz Design Chair at Maryland Institute College of Art. Previously she was the Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City and was named Curator Emerita after 30 years of service. She is the founding director of the Graphic Design M.F.A. degree program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she also serves as director of the Center for Design Thinking. Jack McCauley is an American engineer, hardware designer, inventor, video game developer and philanthropist. As an engineer at Activision, he designed the guitars and drums for the Guitar Hero video game series and was the Chief Engineer at Oculus VR, which was later acquired by Facebook for $2 billion.
