Jacobowsky Und Der Oberst (opera)
''Jacobowsky und der Oberst'', Op. 49, (''Jacobovsky and the Colonel'') is an opera in four acts by Giselher Klebe who also wrote the libretto based on the 1944 play ' by Franz Werfel. It premiered on 2 November 1965 at the Hamburg State Opera which had Commission (art), commissioned the work. Klebe dedicated it to the then director of the Staatsoper, Rolf Liebermann. Giselher Klebe
Giselher Wolfgang Klebe (28 June 19255 October 2009) was a German composer, and an academic teacher. He composed more than 140 works, among them 14 operas, all based on literary works, eight symphonies, 15 solo concerts, chamber music, piano works, and sacred music. Biography Giselher Klebe was born in Mannheim, Germany. He received musical tuition early in his life from his mother, the violinist Gertrud Klebe. The family relocated in 1932 to Munich, where his mother's sister, Melanie Michaelis, continued the training. His father's profession required a further relocation in 1936 to Rostock. Following the separation of his parents, Klebe moved with his mother and sister to Berlin. During 1938, the 13-year-old sketched his first compositions. In 1940, he began studies in violin, viola, and composition, supported by a grant from the city of Berlin. Erwin Wohlfahrt
Erwin Wohlfahrt (13 January 1932 – 28 November 1968) was a German operatic tenor, best known for the non-heroic roles for tenor in Wagner operas, such as Mime the dwarf and David the shoemaker's apprentice. Wohlfahrt studied at the Music Academy in his native Nuremberg. He sang numerous character-tenor roles in Wagner operas at Bayreuth from 1963 through 1967, including the very demanding role of Mime the evil dwarf. Several of his performances are available on CD, including Mime, David, Pedrillo, the ''Hirt'' in ''Tristan und Isolde'', and the Painter in ''Lulu''. He sings Mime on the recorded 1967 performance of the ''Ring Cycle'' from Bayreuth conducted by Karl Böhm, which has been available since the vinyl days. Like his fellow German tenor Fritz Wunderlich, Wohlfahrt died in his mid-thirties. Francis Of Assisi
Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, better known as Saint Francis of Assisi ( it, Francesco d'Assisi; – 3 October 1226), was a mystic Italian Catholic friar, founder of the Franciscans, and one of the most venerated figures in Christianity. He was inspired to lead a life of poverty and itinerant preaching. Pope Gregory IX canonized him on 16 July 1228. He is usually depicted in a robe with a rope as belt. Kurt Marschner
Kurt Marschner (27 April 1913 – 25 September 1984) was a German operatic tenor and actor. Life and career Born in Krásná Lípa, Marschner trained as a singer at the Dresden Conservatory. He made his debut in Karlsbad (Sudetenland), not far from his native village. From 1942 to 1944 Marschner sang at the opera in German-occupied Oslo. After the end of the war he played in Oldenburg and Frankfurt. In 1949 Marschner joined the Hamburg State Opera where he remained a member of the ensemble for several decades. At this venue he took part in over 4000 performances. In addition to his work on stage, Marschner also appeared in filmed performances beginning in the 1960s: At first he played and sang small parts in works such as ''Fidelio'' and ''The Magic Flute''. The Wandering Jew is a mythical immortal man whose legend began to spread in Europe in the 13th century. In the original legend, a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion was then cursed to walk the Earth until the Second Coming. Hans Sotin (born 10 September 1939) is a German operatic bass. He was born in Dortmund and studied at the Dortmund Hochschule für Musik. He made his operatic debut in 1962 in Essen as the Police Commissioner in Strauss's ''Der Rosenkavalier''. He joined the Hamburg State Opera in 1964 where he was made a Kammersänger. He had a long career in which he sang most of the major bass roles in many opera houses, both in Europe and America. He made numerous appearances at the Bayreuth Festival over several decades. Peter Roth-Ehrang (8 June 1925 – 28 December 1966) was a German operatic bass and actor. Life Born in Ehrang, Roth-Ehrang came from a family of craftsmen; his father was a master printer. Before embarking on a full-time career as an artist, he was a trained surveyor. After his release from French captivity (May 1948), Roth-Ehrang trained his bass voice in Trier and Wiesbaden. Mária von Ilosvay (8 May 1913 – 16 June 1987) was a Hungarian contralto renowned for her performances of the role of Erda in Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. A contralto () is a type of classical female singing voice whose vocal range is the lowest female voice type.
