Jacks Knob Trail
Jacks Knob Trail is a hiking trail that has been designated as a National Recreation Trail in Georgia, US. The trail is long and is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest in the Brasstown Ranger District. The trail is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The trail starts at Brasstown Bald and heads in a southernly direction along the boundary between Union and Towns counties. After and a descent of nearly , it reaches Jacks Gap and crosses Georgia State Route 180. Shortly after reaching Jacks Gap, Jacks Knob Trail enters the Mark Trail Wilderness. The National Trails System is a series of trails in the United States designated "to promote the preservation of, public access to, travel within, and enjoyment and appreciation of the open-air, outdoor areas and historic resources of the Nation". Brasstown Bald
Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in the northeastern part of the state in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border between Towns and Union counties south of the city of Hiawassee. The mountain is known to the native Cherokee people as Enotah. Description The name in English is derived from a mistaken translation of the term for the nearby Cherokee village of Brasstown, located along the upper Brasstown Creek (named in English from the same error) feeding the Hiawassee River. Union County, Georgia
Union County is a county located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,632. The county seat is Blairsville. History Union County was originally a core part of the homeland of the native Cherokee tribe. Mountainous and formerly one of the most remote and inaccessible parts of Georgia, the area became the object of desire for white settlers with the discovery of gold in the 1820s. State Route 180 (SR 180) is a state highway in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its routing is located within portions of Union and Towns counties. Route description SR 180 begins at an intersection with SR 60 in Suches, within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and Union County. It winds its way to the northeast until it intersects US 19/ US 129/ SR 11 (Gainesville Highway), just northeast of Vogel State Park. The Mark Trail Wilderness was designated in 1991 and currently consists of . It is named in honor of Mark Trail, a daily newspaper comic strip created by the American cartoonist Ed Dodd. The Wilderness is located within the borders of the Chattahoochee National Forest in White, Towns, and Union counties, Georgia.
