Jack Phillips (wireless Officer)
John George Phillips (11 April 1887 – 15 April 1912) was a British sailor and the senior wireless operator aboard the ''Titanic'' during her ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. On the final evening, Phillips had been exceptionally busy clearing a backlog of messages caused by a wireless breakdown. His consequent failure to respond to incoming signals is cited as a principal cause of the disaster. When the steamship ''Mesaba'' sent an ice alert, he acknowledged it, but failed to pass it on to the bridge. Another from the nearby ''SS Californian'' was ignored altogether. After they struck the iceberg, however, Phillips did his utmost to contact other ships for assistance. He died in the sinking. Early life Phillips was born on 11 April 1887 in Farncombe, Surrey. Jack Dorn Phillips (September 6, 1921 – August 30, 2009) was an American professional baseball player whose career extended from 1943 to 1959. In the Major Leagues, he was a backup first baseman who played for three different teams between the and seasons. Listed at tall and , Phillips batted and threw right-handed, and was nicknamed "Stretch" for his flexibility when covering first base. Early years A native of Clarence, New York, Phillips graduated from Lancaster High School in 1939 and Clarkson University in 1943. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Baseball career Phillips entered the majors in 1947 with the New York Yankees, playing for them two and half years joining the Pittsburgh Pirates (1949–52) and Detroit Tigers (1955–57). John Stephen Phillips (May 24, 1919 – June 16, 1958) was an American professional baseball player. A right-handed pitcher, he appeared on the mound in one game in Major League Baseball in , working 4 innings in relief for the New York Giants and giving up five runs (all of them earned) on five hits and four bases on balls as the Giants were routed by the St. Louis Cardinals, 14–3. He also appeared in one other MLB game as a pinch runner on July 31 of that season against the Boston Braves, but failed to score a run. Phillips was a native of St. Louis whose pro career lasted for seven seasons (1942–48). Listed as tall and , he had also spent part of 1945 as a member of the Giants' top farm club, Jersey City of the International League. John Phillips (28 May 1903 – 1985) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a forward in the Football League, most notably for Bristol Rovers and Merthyr Town. He finished his league career with 107 goals in 179 appearances. Career Phillips began his Football League career with spells at West Bromwich Albion, Rochdale and Southend United and with all of whom he received little playing time. He returned to Wales to sign for Third Division South club Merthyr Town in 1925 and scored 31 goals in 57 league appearances during two seasons with the club. Phillips joined Third Division South club Brentford for a £650 fee in July 1927. Despite missing 19 league games, he showed prolific form, scoring 18 goals in 23 matches during the 1927–28 season. He began the 1928–29 season in similar form, scoring four goals in his six four games, before being sold on 26 September 1928. Jack Phillips (born 15 October 1993) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Career Born in Liverpool, Phillips attended the Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School in the city and started his career in the youth team at Blackburn Rovers, before joining Premier League side Wigan Athletic on a two-year scholarship in 2010. In the summer of 2012 after completing his scholarship, he signed a two-year professional contract with the club. He featured predominantly in the reserve side and was released in the summer of 2014, after spending four years at the club without making a first team appearance. Following his release from professional football, he started a Sports Science Degree at Liverpool John Moores University combining this with playing for non-league side Prescot Cables of the Northern Premier League Division One North.
