Jack McDonald (September 17, 1880 – 1962) was an American actor of the silent era. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1912 and 1930. He was born in San Francisco, California. ''Cameo Kirby'' is a 1923 American silent drama film directed by John Ford which starred John Gilbert and Gertrude Olmstead and featuring Jean Arthur in her onscreen debut. It was Ford's first film credited as John Ford instead of Jack Ford. The film is based on a 1908 play by Booth Tarkington and Harry Leon Wilson. The story had been filmed as a silent before in 1914 with Dustin Farnum, who had originated the role on Broadway in 1909. The film was remade as a talking musical film in 1930. ''The Ship from Shanghai'' is a 1930 Pre-Code American action film directed by Charles Brabin and written by John Howard Lawson. The film stars Conrad Nagel, Kay Johnson, Carmel Myers, Holmes Herbert and Zeffie Tilbury. The film was released on January 31, 1930, by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The September 14, 1929 issue of "Loew's Weekly" claimed that it was the first all-talking picture to be made entirely at sea, "a special yacht having been outfitted with sound-absorbent material, from the captain's cabin to the keel, for this purpose. This yacht will be demolished in the climactic episode of the film." ''Show Boat'' is a 1929 American romantic drama film based on the 1926 novel ''Show Boat (novel), Show Boat'' by Edna Ferber. The film initially did not use the Show Boat, 1927 stage musical of the same name as a source, but scenes were later added into the film incorporating two of the songs from the musical as well as other songs. This version was released by Universal Studios, Universal in two editions, one a silent film for movie theatres still not equipped for sound, and one a part-talkie with a sound prologue. The film was long believed to be lost, but most of it has been found and released on LaserDisc and shown on Turner Classic Movies. A number of sections of the soundtrack were found in the mid-1990s on Vitaphone records, although the film was made with a Movietone sound system, Movietone soundtrack. ''Champion of Lost Causes'' is a 1925 American silent mystery film directed by Chester Bennett and starring Edmund Lowe, Barbara Bedford, and Walter McGrail. A writer in search of a story visits a gambling club and witnesses a murder, which he attempts to solve. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Loring, an author, in getting material for a book, goes to a gambling den. He sees Wilbur, who acts strangely. He follows him and when Wilbur is killed, Peter Charles, father of Beatrice Charles, is accused of the murder. The gambler gives him a fictitious story about a murderous gang when Loring attempts to solve the murder mystery. Several attempts are made on his life by the gang but fail. ''Don Q, Son of Zorro'' is a 1925 American silent swashbuckler romance film and a sequel to the 1920 silent film '' The Mark of Zorro''. It was loosely based upon the 1909 novel ''Don Q.'s Love Story'', written by the mother-and-son duo Kate and Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard. The story was reworked in 1925 (after Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard's death) into a vehicle for the Johnston McCulley character Zorro. The film adaptation was made by screenwriters Jack Cunningham and Lotta Woods for United Artists studios. Douglas Fairbanks both produced the film and starred as its lead character.
