Jack Davey
John Andrew Davey (8 February 190714 October 1959), known as Jack Davey, was a New Zealand-born singer and pioneering star of Australian radio as a performer, producer, writer and host from the early 1930s into the late 1950s. Later in his career he also worked briefly in television, primarily as a presenter. Early life Jack Davey was born John Andrew Davey in Auckland on 8 February 1907 and educated at King's College. Davey was the second son of Union Steam Ship Company captain Arthur Henry Davey and his wife Ella May, née Hunter. After leaving school, Davey worked in the haberdashery department of a large store, but left after a close friend and workmate died after falling down an open lift shaft. Noel Rubie
Alfred Noel Joseph Rubie (25 December 1901 – 13 July 1975) was an Australian modernist painter, portrait and commercial photographer, playwright and pharmacy proprietor who worked in Sydney during the 1920s and into the 1960s. In addition to his work as a painter and photographer, Rubie was involved with the Independent Theatre as a photographer, actor, writer, and costume and set designer. Early life Noel Rubie was born on Christmas Day 1901, the only child of Annie Maria (née Cooper) and James Joseph Rubie in Newtown, New South Wales. ''Give It a Go'' was an Australian television game show which aired in 1957. It was hosted by Jack Davey, who also hosted two other Australian game shows during the late-1950s, ''The Dulux Show'' and ''The Pressure Pak Show'', and was produced by Sydney station ATN-7 also airing in Melbourne on station GTV-9. It was sponsored by Persil, a laundry detergent. At least 16 kinescope recordings exist of the series at the National Film and Sound Archive, along with copies of a radio simulcast broadcast over the Macquarie Broadcasting Network. The radio version had been going for many years prior to the simulcast. All of the programs mentioned above were simulcasts of long-running Jack Davey radio programs, broadcast on the Macquarie Radio Network. ''The Pressure Pak Show'' is an Australian television game show. It first aired from 1957 to 1958 on ATN-7 in Sydney and GTV-9 in Melbourne. ''The Dulux Show'' was an Australian television game show which aired in 1957. It was hosted by Jack Davey, and produced by Sydney station ATN-7, also airing in Melbourne on station GTV-9. Contestants competed for the chance to win a plane trip to a location like London or San Francisco. As the title suggests, it was sponsored by Dulux paint. ATN is the Sydney Flagship (broadcasting), flagship television station of the Seven Network in Australia. The licence, issued to a company named Amalgamated Television Services, a subsidiary of Fairfax Media, John Fairfax & Sons, was one of the first four licences (two in Sydney, two in Melbourne) to be issued for commercial television stations in Australia. It began broadcasting on 2 December 1956. The station formed an affiliation with GTV (Australian TV station), GTV-9 Melbourne in 1957, in order to share content. In 1963, Frank Packer ended up owning both GTV-9 and TCN, TCN-9, so as a result the stations switched their previous affiliations. Round Australia Trial
The Round Australia Trial was a long distance rally (a form of motorsport that takes place on public or private roads), which was run on multiple occasions between 1953 and 1998, circumnavigating Australia. Its early years were tremendously popular as the roads through large portions of the country, particularly west of Adelaide, were not in good condition. Automobile manufacturers enthused over the event as it provided a particularly severe test event for their products, proving their cars were able to stand up to whatever conditions remote Australia could provide. Early editions of the event were heroic tests and were front-page fodder for the newspapers of the era.
