Jack Connell (footballer)
John Thomas Connell (24 August 1912 – 25 March 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda Football Club, St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). Connell played with the Corowa Football Club, Corowa Stars in 1930 in the Corowa & District Football Association and then with the Wangaratta Football Club in 1931 and 1932 in the Ovens & King Football League. Connell was granted a permit by the VFL in June 1932 from Wangaratta to St. Kilda to play in their Reserves side. Connell made his VFL senior debut in round 18, 1932 against Carlton at centre half forward and "made an impressive debut". Connell starred in St. Kilda's 1933 VFL Reserves one point grand final defeat to Melbourne on the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Connell married Patrica Alma Webber in December 1933. Brighton Football Club
Brighton Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The club was based in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, and was nicknamed the Penguins. After suffering financial hardship throughout the 1950s, Brighton moved to Caulfield and became the Caulfield Bears in the early to mid-1960s. History An advertisement in '' The Argus'' on 8 June 1859 announced a meeting to be held on the 9th of that month, at the Devonshire Hotel, to form the Brighton Football Club. There are references to an active Brighton Park club in 1867, and Brighton Football club in 1872, 1878, 1882 and 1883. Those clubs may or may not have been connected. The Wangaratta Magpies Football Club, officially known as the Wangaratta Magpies Football & Netball Club, is an Australian rules football club, which first played in the Ovens and Murray Football League in 1893 and is based in Wangaratta, Victoria at the Wangaratta Showgrounds and play on the Norm Minns Oval. The Ovens & King Football Netball League is a minor country Australian rules football league based in North-Eastern Victoria in the vicinity of Wangaratta and more recently Benalla. History The ''Ovens & King Football League'' was formed on the 13th of June 1903, after a handful of men met at The Bulls Head Hotel in Wangaratta to consider forming a football competition. One week later, the first matches of the Ovens & King Football Association were played. The competition changed its name to the Ovens and King Football League after the 1928 season. Today, more than 100 years later, teams from Benalla, Bright, Greta, King Valley, Milawa, Moyhu, North Wangaratta, Tarrawingee and Whorouly participate in seniors, reserves and five netball grades.
