Welterweight
Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Etymology The first known instance of the term is from 1831, meaning "heavyweight horseman," later "boxer or wrestler of a certain weight" by 1896. This sense comes from earlier "welter" "heavyweight horseman or boxer" from 1804, possibly from "welt", meaning "to beat severely", from 15th century. Charley White
Charley White who was born Charles Anchowitz on 25 March 1891 in Liverpool, England was considered one of the best boxers of his era. White fought from 1906 until 1923. He made one ill-fated comeback attempt in 1930, but was ignominiously TKOed by Henry Perlick, a nondescript fighter who would not have stood a chance against White in his prime. White boxed in the United States for his entire career making his home in Chicago at the age of seven. Under current rules, his championship bouts with Willie Ritchie and Freddie Welsh, where he dealt more blows would have had him winning the bouts on points and taking the world lightweight championship, but when he fought only a knockout would have allowed him to win the match and the title. In 1958, Nat Fleischer, publisher of ''The Ring'' magazine rated Charley White the tenth greatest lightweight of all time. Biography In a nineteen year career, White fought the top contenders and champions in each of three weight classes: Abe ...

Ray Bronson
Ray Bronson (August 1887 – January 1948) briefly claimed the World Welterweight Boxing Title between February and December 1912. Early life Like so many boxers of his era, Bronson was forced to begin earning a living at an early age. After working as a messenger boy, he became an apprentice horseshoer in an Indianapolis blacksmith shop. As his strength improved, he was often given the task of shoeing the strongest, and most defiant horses. His youthful career as a blacksmith strengthened his arms, and shoulders, and even helped create endurance, all essential skills for a successful boxer. He became a member of the Horseshoer's Union in October 1905, and served as a delegate of the Central Labor Union through 1907. Early boxing career At least according to BoxRec, Bronson had begun his professional boxing career by the age of seventeen in early 1905, and although the location of many of his early fights remains unclear, he fought often in his hometown of Indianapolis and occa ...

Early life Born Myron Mitchell on January 1, 1899, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mitchell was nicknamed Pinky because of his father's statement, on seeing Mitchell in his crib as a baby, that "he's like a little pink rascal." He was a highly praised amateur boxer, and during his amateur days, former lightweight champion Battling Nelson said he was the best-looking prospect he had seen. Professional career Mitchell began boxing professionally in 1917. His brother, Richie Mitchell, was also a boxer. Their two styles were quite different, however. List Of WBA World Champions
This is a list of WBA world champions, showing every world champion certified by the World Boxing Association (WBA). The list also includes champions certified by the National Boxing Association (NBA), the predecessor to the WBA. Boxers who won the title but were stripped due to the title bout being overturned to a no contest are not listed. In December 2000, the WBA created an unprecedented situation of having a split championship in the same weight class by introducing a new title called ''Super world'', commonly referred to simply as ''Super''. The ''Super'' champion is highly regarded as the WBA's primary champion, while the ''World'' champion – commonly known as the ''Regular'' champion by boxing publications – is only considered the primary champion by the other three major sanctioning bodies ( WBC, IBF, and WBO) if the ''Super'' title is vacant. A ''Unified'' champion is a boxer that holds the ''Regular'' title and a world title from another major sanctioning body (WB ...
