Jabberwocks
The Jabberwocks is the oldest a cappella group at Brown University. History The group began in 1949 as an offshoot of the traditional Men's Glee Club when four members decided to start their own independent singing group. In 1956, Brown Music Department chair Arlan Coolidge, frustrated that the group was getting bookings that would otherwise have gone to the Glee Club, referred to the Jabberwocks as "a misguided small group of students whose product is a type of vaudeville." The original Jabberwocks, a double quartet, "wore grey flannel suits, white button-down oxford shirts, striped ties and white buck shoes, and travelled to out-of-town concerts in a 1928 Rolls-Royce." The Chattertocks, a female a cappella group at the Pembroke women's college began as a parody of the Jabberwocks in 1952. Keith Barbour
Keith Barbour (born January 21, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter and actor who was a member of the Jabberwocks and New Christy Minstrels. Career He was a member of the Jabberwocks, Brown University's oldest male a cappella group, while in college. He was later a member of the New Christy Minstrels The New Christy Minstrels are an American large-ensemble folk music group founded by Randy Sparks in 1961. The group has recorded more than 20 albums and scored several hits, including " Green, Green", "Saturday Night", "Today", "Denver", and ... before signing to Epic Records as a solo artist in 1969. He released an album, ''Echo Park'', in 1969, which hit No. 163 on the ''Billboard'' 200, and the title track, written by Buzz Clifford, hit No. 40 on the Pop Singles chart. Kid Beyond
Andrew Chaikin, better known by his stage name Kid Beyond, is an American singer, beatboxer, live looper and voice actor, based in the San Francisco area. Early career Chaikin attended Brown University and was a leader in the co-ed fraternity Zeta Delta Xi. He sang in the Jabberwocks, a student a cappella group. He graduated in 1991 and moved to San Francisco to join the House Jacks with Deke Sharon, recording "Naked Noise" and "Funkwich" with the band (the latter for Tommy Boy Records). He left the House Jacks in 1997. In 2004, Kid Beyond made a cameo appearance as an actor in the music video Maximum Wage, which featured music he co-created with Andrew Bancroft. He released his first solo EP, ''Amplivate'', in 2006. Performances Kid Beyond has toured nationally with Imogen Heap. David Gockley
David Gockley (born July 13, 1943, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American opera company administrator. He served as general director of Houston Grand Opera from 1972 to 2005 and San Francisco Opera from 2006 to 2016. He is a student of Margaret Harshaw. Biography Richard David Gockley was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Wayne, Pennsylvania. He holds a bachelor's degree from Brown University, where he sang with the Jabberwocks, and a master's degree from Columbia University. According to San Francisco Opera's website, his father was an athletic coach and inspired his early love for sports, and he inherited a passion for music from his mother. Collegiate a cappella (or college a cappella) ensembles are college-affiliated singing groups, primarily in the United States, and, increasingly, the United Kingdom and Ireland, that perform entirely without musical instruments. The groups are typically composed of, operated by, and directed by students. Michael Weisman
Michael Paul Weisman (born January 13, 1950) is an American television producer, specializing in sports, news and entertainment programs. Early life Michael Weisman was born in Queens, NY, the middle of three children to Edward, who was a publicist at ABC and NBC Sports, and Dorothy. During his sophomore year at the University of North Carolina his father passed away suddenly from a heart attack. Weisman returned to New York and graduated from Queens College in 1971.
