Jürgen Rüttgers
Jürgen Rüttgers (born 26 June 1951) is a German politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who served as the 9th Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2005 to 2010. Education Rüttgers was born in Cologne. He holds degrees in Law and History from the University of Cologne and a Dr. Jur. (Ph.D.) in Law (1979). He became a member of K.D.St. V. Rappoltstein Köln, a Catholic student fraternity that is member of the Cartellverband. Political career Career in national politics Rüttgers was a Member of the German Bundestag from 1987 until 2000. In 1991 he succeeded Friedrich Bohl as First Secretary of the parliamentary group, in this position assisting the parliamentary group's chairman Wolfgang Schäuble. The Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia (german: Ministerpräsident des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen), also referred to as Premier or Prime Minister, is the head of government of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (''NRW''). The position was created in 1946, when the British administration merge the Prussian province of Westphalia and the northern part of the Prussian province of the Rhine (North Rhine) were merged to form the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1947 the state was expanded with including of the state of Lippe. The current Minister-President is Hendrik Wüst, heading a coalition government between the Christian Democratic Union and the Free Democratic Party. Luigi Berlinguer (; born 25 July 1932) is an Italian politician who served in the government of Italy as minister of education from 1996 to 2000. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Early life and education Berlinguer was born in Sassari on 25 July 1932. His brother was Sergio, who was a diplomat and politician. They are cousin of communist leader Enrico Berlinguer, who died in 1984. He obtained a law degree from the University of Sassari in 1955. Career Berlinguer served as mayor of Sennori. Friedrich Bohl (born March 5, 1945 in Rosdorf, Göttingen) is a former German politician. From 1991 to 1998 he was the chief of the Federal Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Affairs. Federal elections were held in West Germany on 25 January 1987 to elect the members of the 11th Bundestag. This was the last federal election held in West Germany before German reunification. Issues and campaign The SPD nominated Johannes Rau, their vice chairman and the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, as their candidate for Chancellor. However, the SPD suffered from internal divisions and competition with the Greens.
