János Szentágothai
János Szentágothai FRS (31 October 1912 – 8 September 1994) was a Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian anatomist, Professor, Member of Parliament, and President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.His father was Antal Géza MD, great-grandfather was Alexander Lumniczer (whose brother-in-law was Schöpf-Merei Ágost). The general assembly of UNESCO decided the year 2012 to be dedicated to honour the 100th birthday of János Szentágothai. Biography He was born as János Schimert, in Budapest in 1912, to Dr Gustav Schimert and Margit Antal, in a family of doctors. He was descended from Transylvanian Saxons on his father's side and Székely on his mother's side. He was admitted to the German grammar school in Budapest in 1930, and was admitted to the Peter Pázmány University Medical School. Four brothers also studied in the same place. Pestújhely
Pestújhely (literally: ''New Settlement by Pest'', german: Neustädtl) is one of the northern suburbs of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It belongs to District XV. History Until the second half of the 19th century, this area belonged to the village of Rákospalota and was uninhabited and marshy. In 1897 building plots were sold out by auction and the new settlement became independent from Rákospalota in 1909. The inhabitants of Pestújhely were clerks, postmasters, railwaymen and other lower-middle-class people, many of whom worked in Budapest. The rapid development of the village continued until the Second World War with the building of houses, churches and schools. In 1950 it became part of Great-Budapest as well as Rákospalota. The small suburb today is a pleasant backwater with a quiet market-town atmosphere. Its landmarks are some old villas and three small churches. Péter Érdi (born December 12, 1946) is a Hungarian born computational neuroscientist who now lives in Michigan, United States where he is a Henry R. Luce Professor aKalamazoo College In his career he wrote several books and published (co-published) many scholarly articles in the fields of Chemical kinetics, Computational neuroscience and Complex systems Background Érdi was born in 1946 in Budapest, Hungary. He was the only son of Pál Érdi, a chief engineer at the tannery factory and Magdolna Friedmann, an office manager at the journal Nagyvilág. He has two children and two grandchildren.
