Justine Caines
Justine Maree Caines OAM (born 21 February 1973) was a lobbyist and advocate in Australia. She died aged 49 years, following a 14 month battle with glioblastoma on 12 September 2022. Activism Justine Caines was National President of Maternity Coalition, the national umbrella organization for maternity lobbying in Australia from 2003–05 and 2008–09. She was the National Co-ordinator of Homebirth Australia from 2001–2006 and secretary from 2006–10. She was also National Advocacy Advisor for Maternity Coalition. Glioblastoma
Glioblastoma, previously known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), is one of the most aggressive types of cancer that begin within the brain. Initially, signs and symptoms of glioblastoma are nonspecific. They may include headaches, personality changes, nausea, and symptoms similar to those of a stroke. Symptoms often worsen rapidly and may progress to unconsciousness. The cause of most cases of glioblastoma is not known. Uncommon risk factors include genetic disorders, such as neurofibromatosis and Li–Fraumeni syndrome, and previous radiation therapy. Glioblastomas represent 15% of all brain tumors. They can either start from normal brain cells or develop from an existing low-grade astrocytoma. The diagnosis typically is made by a combination of a CT scan, MRI scan, and tissue biopsy. Maternity Choices Australia, formerly the Maternity Coalition is an Australian advocacy group which aims to improve the provision of maternity services to parents. It consists of individuals as well as other non-government organisations. Homebirth Australia
A home birth is a birth that takes place in a residence rather than in a hospital or a birthing center. They may be attended by a midwife, or lay attendant with experience in managing home births. Home birth was, until the advent of modern medicine, the de facto method of delivery. The term was coined in the middle of the 19th century as births began to take place in hospitals. Multiple studies have been performed concerning the safety of home births for both the child and the mother. David Vernon (born 1965 in Canberra, Australia) is an Australian writer and publisher. He has published several books relating to scepticism and childbirth. Biography Vernon is the only son of Michael Vernon and Jeanette Vernon. He established two businesses while at University, ''Whiahwe Waiting Services'' that provided catering to diplomatic missions in Canberra, and ''MangoSoft'', a software development house. He graduated from the Australian National University with qualifications in political science and economics in 1988. What Women Want was an Australian political organisation launched in April 2007 which, its website says, "aims to be Australia's first female political party dedicated to advancing issues affecting Australian women".
