"Just a Dream" is a 1958 single by Jimmy Clanton and His Rockets released on the Ace Records label. The actual record-label states that it was written by Clanton and Cosimo Matassa (Matassa was Clanton's manager), but other sources state that Clanton was the sole composer. Original words written by Regina F Phillips and sent to Lew Tobin which were copyrighted. Regina never received credit for the song lyrics. Apparently Lew Tobin was a bit of a song shark as noted by Randy Johnson. Ace Records (United States)
Ace Records was a record label that was started in August 1955 in Jackson, Mississippi by Johnny Vincent, with Teem Records as its budget subsidiary. History Ace also had the Vin label. Its records were distributed independently until 1962 when a distribution arrangement was set up with Vee-Jay Records. Ace Records stopped when Vee-Jay ran out of funds and went out of business. The label was relaunched in 1971 and sold in 1997 to the Demon Music Group in the UK. Ace recorded such artists as Earl King, Frankie Ford, Jimmy Clanton, Huey "Piano" Smith, Joe Tex, Scotty McKay, and Bobby Marchan. Ace Records received a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Jimmy Clanton
Jimmy Clanton (born September 2, 1938) is an American singer who became known as the " swamp pop R&B teenage idol". His band recorded a hit song "Just a Dream" which Clanton had written in 1958 for the Ace Records label. It reached number four on the '' Billboard'' chart and sold a million copies. Clanton performed on Dick Clark's '' American Bandstand'' and toured with popular artists like Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and the Platters. History Clanton formed his first band called the Rockets in 1956 while attending Baton Rouge High School. One of the few white singers to come out of the New Orleans R&B/rock & roll sound, he rode the crest of the popular teen-music wave in the 1950s and 1960s. Cosimo Matassa
Cosimo Vincent Matassa (April 13, 1926 – September 11, 2014) was an American recording engineer and studio owner, responsible for many R&B and early rock and roll recordings. Life and career Matassa was born in New Orleans in 1926.Komorowski, Adam. Liner notes. ''The Cosimo Matassa Story'' (CD). In 1944 he began studies as a chemistry major at Tulane University, which he abandoned after completing five semesters of course work. In 1945, at the age of 18, Matassa opened the J&M Recording Studio at the back of his family's shop on Rampart Street, on the border of the French Quarter in New Orleans. In 1955, he moved to the larger Cosimo Recording Studio on Gov. Nichols Street, nearby in the French Quarter. As an engineer and proprietor, Matassa was crucial to the development of the sound of R&B, rock and soul of the 1950s and 1960s, often working with the producers Dave Bartholomew and Allen Toussaint.
