Jupiter, Ex-Goding Stradivarius
The ''Jupiter, ex-Goding Stradivarius'' is a violin constructed in 1722 by the famous luthier Antonio Stradivari of Cremona. It is one of only 700 extant Stradivari instruments in the world today. The ''Jupiter'' is owned by the Nippon Music Foundation. It was on extended loan to Midori prior to her receiving the 1731c ''ex-Gibson/ex-Huberman del Gesu'', which is now her concert instrument. Her play of Jupiter is available from the recording of "Sibelius Violin Concerto" with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra by Sony Classical. She quit playing Jupiter in a short time because the body and neck were too big for her, such that it often hurt her hands, fingers, and arms. And then, it was on loan to Daishin Kashimoto and Manrico Padovani. It is currently on loan to Ryu Goto since December 2013. The violin, sometimes known as a ''fiddle'', is a wooden chordophone (string instrument) in the violin family. Most violins have a hollow wooden body. It is the smallest and thus highest-pitched instrument (soprano) in the family in regular use. Luthier
A luthier ( ; AmE also ) is a craftsperson who builds or repairs string instruments that have a neck and a sound box. The word "luthier" is originally French and comes from the French word for lute. The term was originally used for makers of lutes, but it came to be used already in French for makers of most bowed and plucked stringed instruments such as members of the violin family (including violas, cellos, and double basses) and guitars. Antonio Stradivari
Antonio Stradivari (, also , ; – 18 December 1737) was an Italian luthier and a craftsman of string instruments such as violins, cellos, guitars, violas and harps. The Latinized form of his surname, ''Stradivarius'', as well as the colloquial ''Strad'' are terms often used to refer to his instruments. It is estimated that Stradivari produced 1,116 instruments, of which 960 were violins. Around 650 instruments survive, including 450 to 512 violins. His instruments are considered some of the finest ever made, and are extremely valuable collector's items. Midori Gotō
, who performs under the mononym Midori, is a Japanese-born American violinist. She made her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 11 as a surprise guest soloist at the New Year's Eve Gala in 1982. In 1986 her performance at the Tanglewood Music Festival with Leonard Bernstein conducting his own composition made the front-page headlines in ''The New York Times''. Midori became a celebrated child prodigy, and one of the world's preeminent violinists as an adult. Midori has been honored as an educator and for her community engagement endeavors. Del Gesu
Bartolomeo Giuseppe "del Gesù" Guarneri (, , ; 21 August 1698 – 17 October 1744) was an Italian luthier from the Guarneri family of Cremona. He rivals Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) with regard to the respect and reverence accorded his instruments, and for many prominent players and collectors his instruments are the most coveted of all. Instruments made by Guarneri are often referred to as ''Del Gesùs''. Guarneri is known as ''del Gesù'' (literally "of Jesus") because his labels after 1731 incorporated the ''nomen sacrum'', IHS (''iota-eta-sigma'') and a cross fleury. His instruments diverged significantly from family tradition, becoming uniquely his own style. They are considered equal in quality to those of Stradivari, and claimed by some to be superior. Daishin Kashimoto
Daishin Kashimoto (樫本 大進; ''Kashimoto Daishin''; born 27 March 1979) is a Japanese classical violinist. Since 2009, he has been the first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. Kashimoto is fluent in speaking and writing in Japanese, English and German. He married Ria Ideta, also a musician, in 2008. Early life Kashimoto was born on 27 March 1979 in London, United Kingdom. Ryu Goto
is a Japanese-American concert violinist. Goto gained attention as a child prodigy, first performing at the age of seven in the Pacific Music Festival held in Sapporo, Japan. In 2006, his debut tour of 12 cities of Japan was sold out. Early life Goto's mother is a violinist. His elder (by 17 years) half-sister, Midori, is an internationally renowned violinist. A Stradivarius is one of the violins, violas, cellos and other string instruments built by members of the Italian family Stradivari, particularly Antonio Stradivari (Latin: Antonius Stradivarius), during the 17th and 18th centuries. They are considered some of the finest instruments ever made, and are extremely valuable collector's items. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or equal it, though this belief is disputed.
