The Juno Awards, more popularly known as the JUNOS, are awards presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. New members of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame are also inducted as part of the awards ceremonies. The Juno Awards are often referred to as the Canadian equivalent of the Brit Awards in the United Kingdom or the Grammy Awards given in the United States. Members of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), or a panel of experts, depending on the award, choose the award winners. However, sales figures are the sole basis for determining the winners of nine of the forty-two categories like Album of the Year or Artist of the Year. David Braid (born 25 March 1975 in Hamilton, Ontario) is a Canadian composer and pianist specializing in jazz. Biography Canadian composer and jazz pianist, David Braid, is "considered one of his country's true renaissance men when it comes to music." (The Ottawa Citizen) After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1998, Steinway Artist David Braid focused his career performing original music. George Coleman
George Edward Coleman (born March 8, 1935) is an American jazz saxophonist known for his work with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock in the 1960s. In 2015, he was named an NEA Jazz Master. Early life Coleman was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He was taught how to play the alto saxophone in his teens by his older brother Lucian Adams, inspired (like many jazz musicians of his generation) by Charlie Parker. Among his schoolmates were Harold Mabern, Booker Little, Frank Strozier, Hank Crawford, and Charles Lloyd. Later life and career After working with Ray Charles, Coleman started working with B.B. King in 1953, at which point he switched to tenor saxophone. In 1956 Coleman moved to Chicago, along with Booker Little, where he worked with Gene Ammons and Johnny Griffin before joining Max Roach's quintet (1958–1959). Brandi Disterheft (born 1980) is a Canadian jazz bassist and composer. Biography Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Disterheft grew up in the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia where she attended Handsworth Secondary School. Upon graduation, she won scholarship to attend Humber College in Toronto, Ontario where she studied under Don Thompson. Disterheft has also studied under Rufus Reid, Rodney Whitaker, and Oscar Peterson. Peterson notably said about Disterheft, "She has the same lope or rhythmic pulse as my bassist, Ray Brown. Andy Milne
Andy Milne (born January 30, 1969) is a Canadian jazz pianist, who records and performs both as a solo artist and as the leader of the ensemble Dapp Theory. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and raised in Kincardine and Toronto. One of ten siblings, he studied music at York University, where he was a student of Oscar Peterson. In 1990 Milne graduated and received a grant from the Canada Council to study at the Banff Centre for the Fine Arts. He met saxophonist Steve Coleman and later joined Coleman's band, Five Elements. In 1998, Milne formed the band Cosmic Dapp Theory. He has toured and recorded with Ravi Coltrane, Grégoire Maret, Sean Rickman, and Ralph Alessi. David Anthony Young (born January 29, 1940) is a Canadian double bassist. Career Young played with jazz guitarist Lenny Breau in local gigs before studying music at Berklee College of Music and the Royal Conservatory of Music in the 1960s. He played with a number of Canadian symphony orchestras in the 1970s and worked extensively in jazz with Kenny Barron, Gene DiNovi, Wray Downes, Tommy Flanagan, Oliver Jones, and Oscar Peterson. He was honoured as a Young Member of the Order of Canada in 2006. He has the technique of performing bowed solos like Paul Chambers.
