''Jump for Joy'' is a 1941 musical revue by Duke Ellington that opened on July 10, 1941, at the Mayan Theater of Los Angeles and ran for nine weeks (122 performances). It included many songs by Ellington, including the jazz standard "I Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)" and the title track, "Jump for Joy." Despite the original success, "it never made it to Broadway, but it made it to history"."Jump For Joy: Duke Ellington’s Celebratory Musical", David Johnson, February 6, 2008, ''Indiana Public Media'', consulted on 26 March 2017. http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/jump-for-joy-duke-ellingtons-celebratory-musical/ Political message Contrary to other all-African-American revues of the time, it was very outspoken on racial matters, with the songs "Jump f ...

accessed 19 October 2009

Reception

The Allmusic review by Stewart Mason states: "Something of a companion album to the earlier ''Julian Cannonball Adderley and Strings'', ''Jump for Joy'' sounds like it could be outtakes from the same sessions in terms of its orchestral-quality arrangements, but this is very much its own album. Jump for Joy is Adderley's reinterpretation, circa 1958, of a Duke Ellington stage musical from 1941.... Hearing Adderley's often thrilling, always well-constructed alto sax improvisations over tunes like the standard 'I ...

Jump For Joy (Bobby Short Album)
''Jump for Joy'' is a 1970 album by American singer and pianist Bobby Short. Reception William Ruhlmann reviewed the album for Allmusic and wrote that "For once, the purveyors of the Great American Songbook were absent: no Porter or Gershwin or Rodgers. Instead, Short performed a combination of recent songs from Broadway and old, bluesy numbers. The latter seemed to draw the greatest enthusiasm from him as he revisited some tunes he might have played in Midwest roadhouses back in his youth, songs like "Romance in the Dark," "I'm Confessin' That I Love You," and the newly trendy "If You're a Viper," an ode to marijuana use. ...But even second-drawer Short on record was welcome after so many years away".
