Julius Geertz
Julius Geertz (21 April 1837–21 October 1902) was a German artist of the Düsseldorf school of painting. Biography Geertz was born in Hamburg where he began his artistic studies under the brothers Günther Gensler and , then worked for some time as a private student of the former, after which he became a pupil of Adolf des Coudres in Karlsruhe. He moved to Düsseldorf in 1860 and entered the studio of Rudolf Jordan. In 1864 he travelled to Paris, where he studied the work of the old masters, and afterwards to Brittany and the Netherlands. He then settled in Düsseldorf, where he painted genre scenes, partly serious, partly humorous, taken from ordinary life and the doings of young people; among these ''Der Verbrecher nach der Verurteilung'' ("The Criminal after the Judgement") established his reputation. Johann Peter Theodor Janssen
Johann Peter Theodor Janssen (12 December 1844, Düsseldorf – 19 February 1908, Düsseldorf) was a German historical painter. Biography Janssen was born in Düsseldorf, son of the engraver (1817–1894), by whom he was first instructed before studying at the Academy under Karl Sohn and Bendemann. He is principally known through a series of decorative works whose monumental style and sound naturalism won him a reputation as one of the foremost historical painters of his time. He became professor at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1877 and its director in 1895, and was elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1885. In Berlin, he worked also for Emil Hünten. Eduard Von Gebhardt
Franz Karl Eduard von Gebhardt (13 June 1838 – 3 February 1925) was a Baltic German painter of portraits and historical scenes, and a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Biography He was born to Ferdinand Theodor von Gebhardt (1803–1869), Provost (religion), Provost and member of the Consistory (Protestantism), Consistorial Council in Tallinn, Reval, and his wife, Wilhelmine, née Von Glehn (1808–1880). He graduated from the local Gymnasium (school), gymnasium at sixteen, and enrolled at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he studied for three years. He then spent two years travelling, spending some time in Karlsruhe, where he took classes at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, Academy of Fine Arts. He arrived in Düsseldorf in 1860, and became a student of Wilhelm Sohn, who gave him such wholehearted encouragement that he decided to stay there. Julius Roeting
Julius Amatus Roeting (13 September 1822, in Dresden – 21 May 1896, in Düsseldorf) was a German painter. Biography He displayed artistic talent while still very young and, at the age of twelve, helped create a painting of a lion on a local theater curtain. He began his formal art studies at the Kunstakademie Dresden with Eduard Bendemann then, in 1849, moved to Düsseldorf, where he took over a painting class from the retiring Theodor Hildebrandt at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1868, he was named a professor, to replace the late Karl Ferdinand Sohn. During these years, he travelled extensively. He visited Krefeld in 1854, where he met and married his wife, Maria. The following year, he spent some time in Paris with Ludwig Knaus, then went on to London to paint several portraits, including one of Lord Cranworth, but left before completing his commissions, citing homesickness.
