Julian Slade
Julian Penkivil Slade (28 May 1930 – 17 June 2006) was an English writer of musical theatre, best known for the show ''Salad Days'', which he wrote in six weeks in 1954, and which became the UK's longest-running show of the 1950s, with over 2,288 performances. Biography Born in London, England, in 1930, he moved with his family in 1940 to Painswick, Gloucestershire, where he spent his formative years, becoming a young member of the village dramatic society. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was the first Footlights Vice President. After leaving Cambridge he went on to the drama school at the Bristol Old Vic. During his time at the Old Vic, Slade wrote incidental music for several productions including ''Two Gentlemen of Verona'' and ''The Duenna''. Follow That Girl
''Follow That Girl'' is a musical adapted by Julian Slade and Dorothy Reynolds from their original Bristol Old Vic production ''Christmas in King Street''. The story centers on a girl named Victoria Gilchrist, whose parents want her to marry one of two businessmen. She objects and runs away. Her capture after a long chase by a policeman, Tom, leads to romance and finally marriage to him. The original production contained many topical and local Bristol references — the heroine Victoria was named after the Bristol University Students Union building — but most of these were replaced when the show was revamped for its West End production. Victoria was played by Susan Hampshire and Tom by Peter Gilmore. Others in the cast were James Cairncross – a prime collaborator with Slade and Reynolds in their musicals both as a performer and writer – Patricia Routledge, Robert MacBain and Philip Guard. Sandy Wilson
Alexander Galbraith "Sandy" Wilson (19 May 1924 – 27 August 2014) was an English composer and lyricist, best known for his musical '' The Boy Friend'' (1953). Biography Wilson was born in Sale, Cheshire, England, and was educated at Harrow School. In 1942 he won a State Scholarship for a wartime course at SOAS and was assigned to study Japanese. He was thus one of the so-called 'Dulwich Boys' who studied at SOAS and boarded at Dulwich College. While there he put together a satirical review titled 'A Matter of Course' based on his experiences on the Japanese course. He was one of the few not to complete the course and he subsequently served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in Great Britain, Egypt and Iraq. After the war he went to Oriel College, Oxford and while a student wrote revues for the Oxford University Experimental Theatre Club and then attended the Old Vic Theatre School on a production course. Polari () is a form of slang or cant used in Britain and Ireland by some actors, circus and fairground showmen, professional wrestlers, merchant navy sailors, criminals, sex workers and the gay subculture. Julian And Sandy
Julian and Sandy were characters on the BBC radio comedy programme ''Round the Horne'' from 1965 to 1968 and were played by Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams respectively, with scripts written by Barry Took and Marty Feldman. According to a BBC Radio 4 programme on the characters, they were named after the writers Sandy Wilson and Julian Slade. Background Barry Took describes the original conception of Julian and Sandy as two "old theatrical chaps" who were doing housework in the flat of Kenneth Horne (the "straight man" in the sketches), while waiting for their next acting job. However, the producer of ''Round the Horne'', John Simmonds, did not like them and viewed the characters as "too sad" and suggested making them younger "chorus boy" types. Christopher Slade
Sir Christopher John Slade (2 June 1927 – 7 February 2022) was a British judge who was a Lord Justice of Appeal from 1982 to 1991. Personal life His father was George Penkivil Slade. He had two brothers (Adrian and Julian), as well as a sister. Slade was educated at New College, Oxford, and was awarded the Eldon Scholarship. Marriage He married Jane Buckley in 1958. The couple had four children, Lucinda (born 1959), Victoria (born 1962), Richard (born 1963) and Amelia (born 1966). Death Slade died on 7 February 2022, at the age of 94.
