Julia K. Munley
Julia Kathleen Munley (born 1965) is an American judge who is serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. She previously served on the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas, 45th district. Education Munley received a Bachelor of Arts from Marywood University in 1987 and a Juris Doctor from the Penn State Dickinson Law in 1992. Career From 1992 to 1993, Munley served as a law clerk to Judge Stephen J. McEwen of the Pennsylvania Superior Court. From 1993 to 1995, she was an associate with Masterson, Braunfeld, Maguire & Brown and from 1995 to 2001 she was an associate at Mazzoni & Karam Law Offices in Scranton, Pennsylvania. From 2001 to 2016, she worked as a trial attorney and partner at Munley Law in Scranton. United States District Court For The Middle District Of Pennsylvania
The United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania (in case citations, M.D. Pa.) is a district level federal court with jurisdiction over approximately one half of Pennsylvania. The court was created in 1901 by subdividing the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The court is under the jurisdiction of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit). Because Harrisburg, the state capital, is located within the district's jurisdiction, most suits against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are filed in the Middle District. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges.
