Julia Gjika
Julia Gjika (born 1949) is an Albanian-born poet living in the United States. She is one of the few writers publishing in the Albanian language and writes poetry as well working as a journalist. Her poems have been praised by her peers and have been included in several publications of collected works. Biography Julia Naçi was born 1 July 1949 in Gjirokastra, Albania during the Enver Hoxha dictatorship, which imposed strict sanctions and censorship on literature allowing no development of literary markets until the 1970s. In spite of the ban, Gjika studied finance at Ushrarake Academy and Albanian literature at university. She served as editor of the magazine ''10 Korriku'' (July 10) and was chief financial officer in various military units in Korca and Tirana. The National Library of Albania ( al, Biblioteka Kombëtare e Shqipërisë) is an Albanian national library headquartered in the capital, Tirana. It was founded in 1920 and inaugurated on December 10, 1922. History The Library Commission of Albania began planning the National Library of Albania (NLA) as early as 1917 before its creation on July 10, 1920. The NLA is the primary national cultural institution and the oldest in the Albanian State. By the end of World War II, the NLA was housed in multiple locations across Albania. In 1966, it was relocated to its current place in Tirana. Between 1917 and 1995, the collections grew from 3,000 to nearly 1 million items. Gjirokastër
Gjirokastër (, sq-definite, Gjirokastra) is a city in the Republic of Albania and the seat of Gjirokastër County and Gjirokastër Municipality. It is located in a valley between the Gjerë mountains and the Drino, at 300 metres above sea level. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, described as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate". The city is overlooked by Gjirokastër Fortress, where the Gjirokastër National Folklore Festival is held every five years. It is the birthplace of former Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha, and author Ismail Kadare. Moravians
Moravians ( cs, Moravané or colloquially , outdated ) are a West Slavic ethnographic group from the Moravia region of the Czech Republic, who speak the Moravian dialects of Czech or Common Czech or a mixed form of both. Along with the Silesians of the Czech Republic, a part of the population to identify ethnically as Moravian has registered in Czech censuses since 1991. The figure has fluctuated and in the 2011 census, 6.01% of the Czech population declared Moravian as their ethnicity. Smaller pockets of people declaring Moravian ethnicity are also native to neighboring Slovakia. Etymology A certain ambiguity in Czech derives from the fact that it distinguishes between (Bohemia proper) and (Czech Republic as a whole), but the corresponding adjective and noun designating an inhabitant and/or a member of a nation can be related to either of them. Iliriana Sulkuqi
Iliriana Sulkuqi (born 1951) is an Albanian poet and journalist living in the United States. She was born in Elbasan and studied at the Skanderbeg Military University. After completing her education, she served as an officer in the academy and as a journalist for the military press until 1995, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel. She later worked for ''Drita'', a newspaper published by the Albanian Writers Union. Sulkuqi moved to New York City in 2004. She manages the publication of the literary magazine ''Pelegrin'' (Pilgrim). She began to write while still young. Her work has appeared in various anthologies and been translated into English, Italian, Greek, Bulgarian, Romanian and Macedonian. She helped initiate and contributed to an anthology of writing by Albanian exiles entitled ''Perëndim i malluar'' (Waiting for the sunset).
