Judo At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 78 Kg
The women's 78 kg category in judo at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place between 28 July and 2 August at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. The gold and silver medals were determined by a single-elimination tournament, with the winner of the final taking gold and the loser receiving silver. Judo events awarded two bronze medals. Quarter-final losers competed in a repechage match for the right to face a semi-final loser for a bronze medal (that is, the judokas defeated in quarter-finals 'A' and 'B' competed against each other, with the winner of that match facing the semi-final loser from the other half of the bracket). Kayla Harrison, representing the United States, won the gold medal, defeating Great Britain's Gemma Gibbons in the final; Gibbons was awarded the silver medal. ExCeL London
ExCeL London (an abbreviation for Exhibition Centre London) is an exhibition centre, international convention centre and former hospital in the Custom House, Newham, Custom House area of London Borough of Newham, Newham, East London. Maryna Pryshchepa (Ukrainian: Марина Прищепа; born 28 July 1983) is a Ukrainian judoka. Career She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics (Beijing) in the -78 kg event and lost her opening match to Heide Wollert. Four years later in London, she participated in the -78 kg tournament of the 2012 Summer Olympics and was eliminated in her first match by Audrey Tcheuméo of France. Pryshchepa won a silver medal at the 2009 World Judo Championships. She also has a silver medal (2009) and four bronze medals (2006, 2007, 2010, 2012) at the European Judo Championships. Pryshchepa is also competing in sambo and sumo. She is a world sambo champion. Since 2008 Pryshchepa has been representing Ukraine in sumo. Amy Cotton
Amy Cotton (born 22 January 1980) is a judoka from Canada, who won the bronze medal in the women's half heavyweight division (-78 kg) at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She represented Canada at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. Cotton was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at the age of fourteen and was told that if she continued, she would most likely have serious health complications by the age of 21. Cotton continued to train and is a two time Olympian. She now lives in Saskatchewan. Akari Ogata
is a Japanese judoka. She started taking part in karate at the age of 7 and she became national junior karate champion when she was 10, but at age 13, she quit karate and started to practise judo. She won the bronze medal in the half-heavyweight (78 kg) division at the 2010 World Judo Championships, and silver a year later. She has also won silver at the Asian Games. She had previously won the junior world title in that weight division. Her favorite techniques are uchimata, ōuchi gari and sankaku-jime.
