Judicial Reform In Ukraine
Judicial reform in Ukraine is a set of legislative, institutional and personnel changes aimed at improving the Judiciary of Ukraine. The reform was launched in 2014 after the Revolution of Dignity and the 2014 Ukrainian presidential election. The purpose of the reform is to bring the judiciary of Ukraine to European standards and to ensure the protection of the rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of citizens through timely, effective and fair resolution of legal disputes on the basis of the rule of law. Background After Ukraine gained independence in 1991, the authorities were faced with the task of dismantling the outdated Soviet judicial system and creating a new one based on the principles of the rule of law and the protection of citizens' rights and freedoms. Petro Poroshenko
Petro Oleksiyovych Poroshenko ( uk, Петро́ Олексі́йович Пороше́нко, ; born 26 September 1965) is a Ukrainian businessman and politician who served as the fifth president of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019. Public Integrity Council
The Public Integrity Council is a Ukrainian advisory council created in 2016 for helping the High Qualifications Commission of Judges (HQCJ) of Ukraine to decide on the ethical eligibility of judges. The Venice Commission, officially European Commission for Democracy through Law, is an advisory body of the Council of Europe, composed of independent experts in the field of constitutional law. It was created in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, at a time of urgent need for constitutional assistance in Central and Eastern Europe.
