Jubilee Bridge, Singapore
Jubilee Bridge is a pedestrian bridge spanning the Singapore River, connecting Merlion Park and The Esplanade. The construction of the bridge was suggested by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and was opened ahead of schedule due to his death. History In 2004, while visiting Marina Bay, then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew realised that pedestrians had to walk to Esplanade Bridge to cross the Singapore River, which he believed to be too narrow. Due to this, Jubilee Bridge was designed to run along Esplanade Bridge at a lower and more pedestrian-friendly level. Plans for the bridge were first announced in 2009, and construction began in 2012. The bridge cost $17.7 million and 28 months to build. The bridge was to open in April 2015, but it was unofficially opened on 29 March following the death of Lee Kuan Yew as a final farewell. New Paper Big Walk
The New Paper Big Walk was a mass-participation walking event held annually in Singapore from 1991 to 2016. It holds the official Guinness World Record as world's largest walk when 77,500 walkers participated on 21 May 2000 at the Singapore National Stadium. The 10-kilometre walk takes an estimated 3 hours to complete and usually starts from its traditional starting point, Singapore National Stadium at 6 o'clock in the morning. Lee Hsien Loong (; born 10 February 1952) is a Singaporean politician and former brigadier-general who has been serving as Prime Minister of Singapore and Secretary-General of the People's Action Party since 2004. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Teck Ghee division of Ang Mo Kio GRC since 1991, and previously Teck Ghee SMC between 1984 and 1991. ''TODAY'' is a Singapore English-language digital news provider under Mediacorp, Singapore's largest media broadcaster and provider and the only terrestrial television broadcaster in the country. Death And State Funeral Of Lee Kuan Yew
On 23 March 2015, Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore and co-founder of the People's Action Party, died at the age of 91 at 03:18 Singapore Standard Time ( UTC+08:00), after having been hospitalised at the Singapore General Hospital with severe pneumonia since 5 February that year. A formal announcement was made on national television and radio by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at 08:00 that morning. Many world leaders, governments, international organizations, and individuals issued public condolences. A week-long period of national mourning was declared by the government, from 23 to 29 March that year. All flags, including the National Flag, in Singapore were flown at half-mast during the period. The Esplanade Bridge is a 261-metre-long (850 ft.) road bridge that spans across the mouth of the Singapore River in Singapore with the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay on its northern abutment and the Merlion on the southern.G.
