Juanita Tate
Juanita Tate (1938 – July 5, 2004) was an American community developer who organized and developed real estate to address environmental justice, affordable housing, and economic access for all South Central Los Angeles residents. She is responsible for building housing and a shopping center to eliminate food disparities in South Central Los Angeles after the 1992 Los Angeles riots. She incorporated Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles as a non-profit entity. Concerned Citizens of South Central LA. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and relocated to the city of Los Angeles in the early 1980s to help the telephone company prepare for the 1984 Olympics, and be close to her paternal family that migrated from Augusta, Georgia to South Central Los Angeles in 1905. Tate was a member of the City of Los Angeles's Environmental Action Commission from 2002 until her death from complications of a stroke. 1992 Los Angeles Riots
The 1992 Los Angeles riots, sometimes called the 1992 Los Angeles uprising and the Los Angeles Race Riots, were a series of riots and civil disturbances that occurred in Los Angeles County, California, in April and May 1992. Unrest began in South Central Los Angeles on April 29, after a jury acquitted four officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) charged with using excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King. This incident had been videotaped and widely shown in television broadcasts. The rioting took place in several areas in the Los Angeles metropolitan area as thousands of people rioted over six days following the verdict's announcement. Concerned Citizens Of South Central LA
Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles (CCSCLA) is a non-profit 501(c)3 community-based organization whose mission is to work for social justice and economic and environmental change within the South Central community. CCSCLA works to involve community members in identifying social, economic, and environmental areas of concern to them, and give them the tools necessary to engage with institutions, such as industries or political leaders, to enact change. The designation of 501(c)3 signifies the organization's area of concentration. This area consists of the Santa Monica freeway to the North, the Harbor Freeway to the West, Slauson Avenue to the South and Alameda to the East.
