Juan Guzmán (baseball)
Juan Andres Guzmán Correa (born October 28, 1966) is a former pitcher in Major League Baseball. Guzman spent most of his playing career with the Toronto Blue Jays and was part of their World Series winning teams in 1992 and 1993. Career Guzmán was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1985. He pitched for the Blue Jays from 1991 to 1998, then played briefly for the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, finishing with a career ERA of 4.08. In his first three seasons with the Blue Jays, he went a combined 40–11 with a 3.28 ERA. The Jays made the playoffs all three years, winning the World Series in 1992 and 1993. Guzman won two games in both the 1992 and 1993 ALCS, but did not secure a win in either World Series. His playoff record was 5–1 in eight starts, with a 2.44 ERA. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum.
