Juan Francisco García (composer)
Juan Francisco García (born June 16, 1892 - November 18, 1974) was a Dominican merengue composer. He was one of several merengue musicians who sought to promote the genre in the early 20th century, along with Juan Espínola and Julio Alberto Hernández. Garcia was an educated musician who brought merengue to the upper-class of the country. Biography Juan Francisco García was born on June 16, 1892, in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. From an early age García had an excellent musical ear and a knack for performing various musical instruments. He studied music theory with Maestro José García Oviedo and was later self-taught, he learned to play the cello and piano. The study method of Fetís was Garcia's main guide in the art of composition, which he mastered and from which created an extensive and valuable catalog of works of various genres. Merengue is a type of music and Merengue (dance), dance originating in present-day Dominican Republic which has become a very popular genre throughout Latin America, and also in several major cities in the United States with Latino communities. Merengue was inscribed on November 30, 2016, in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. Merengue was developed in the middle of the 1800s, originally played with European stringed instruments (bandurria and guitar). Years later, the stringed instruments were replaced by the accordion, thus conforming, together with the güira and the Tambora (Dominican drum), tambora, the instrumental structure of the typical merengue ensemble. Julio Alberto Hernández
Julio Alberto Hernández (September 27, 1900 – April 2, 1999) was a Dominican composer. He specialized in folk-music based compositions. Biography He was born in Santiago de los Caballeros and is the nephew of P.T. Camejo. In addition to studying solfeggio with his uncle, he also studied saxophone, piano, and the organ, eventually becoming a teacher and founding the Jose O. Garcia Vila School of Music. Moving to Santo Domingo, he was a founding member of the Sociedad de Conciertos and the Orquesta Sinfonica; he directed the latter until 1937. His works are based on Dominican folk music, usually merengue. The works which have met with the widest acclaim are vocal/piano or orchestral pieces. The National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic (Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional) is the leading Classical music, classical orchestra of the Dominican Republic; it was founded in 1941. Background The National Symphony Orchestra was officially created on August 5, 1941. Nevertheless, its history can be traced to the beginning of the 20th century, when under the initiative of Juan Bautista Alfonseca, the Octet of the Youth Casino was founded in Santo Domingo. Eduardo Brito
Eduardo Brito (January 22, 1906 – January 5, 1946) was a Dominican baritone singer. He was world-renowned for his voice and took to the stage in many countries performing operas and zarzuelas. The main hall of the Dominican National Theater is named after Brito. Early years Brito was born Eleuterio Brito in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He came from a poor family and during his childhood he worked as a shoe-shiner and a candyman. Margarita Luna De Espaillat
Margarita Luna de Espaillat (July 31, 1921 – 2016) was a composer, pianist, and organist from the Dominican Republic. Born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Luna de Espaillat began her studies under Juan Francisco García (composer), Juan Francisco García; later instructors included Manuel Antonio Rueda González, with whom she studied piano; Juan Urteaga, with whom she studied organ; and Manuel Simó, with whom she studied harmony, counterpoint, and fugue. From 1964 until 1967 she was a pupil of Hall Overton at the Juilliard School. For many years she was director of the National Conservatory of Music in the Dominican Republic.
