João Moojen
João Moojen de Oliveira (December 1, 1904 in Leopoldina, MG, Brazil – March 31, 1985 in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil) was a zoologist dedicated to the systematics of Brazilian mammals, particularly rodents and primates. He was also interested in birds. He collected extensively between the 1930s and 50s and wrote "Os Roedores do Brasil" in 1952, a key book on Brazilian rodents. He was an authority on spiny rats of the genus ''Phyllomys''. As well as performing research, Moojen worked significantly as a teacher and technical advisor; positions held include: head of the Biology Department of Escola Superior de Agricultura e Veterinária do Estado de Minas Gerais, in Viçosa; Professor-Head of Natural History of Colégio Universitário da Universidade do Brasil; Naturalist of Vertebrate and Invertebrate Zoology Division of Museu Nacional including headed this division into two stages and collected most of the mammals deposited in this collection and in Universidade do Estado do Rio de ... Leopoldina is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. , it has a population of 52,640. It is situated in the southeastern Zona da Mata mesoregion of the state. ''Trinomys gratiosus'' is a species in the mainly South American family Echimyidae, the spiny rats; it occurs in southeast Brazil from the south bank of the River Doce, Espirito Sante, southward to Teresopolis, Rio de Janeiro. Taxonomy Recently published studies suggest that the taxonomy of the genus ''Trinomys'' as currently described is not yet stable and that the genus might well be split. Some evidence suggests that the lineage of the South American spiny rats is older than might have been expected and in spite of morphological resemblance, the populations have diverged widely. Status In 2008 the IUCN Red List rated ''Trinomys gratiosus'' as Least Concern (''LC''); its population is apparently large, it does not seem to be declining fast enough for listing in a threatened category, and the habitat is not under obvious threat. The acrobatic cavy (''Kerodon acrobata'') also known as the Acrobatic Moco and Climbing Cavy is a cavy species native to Brazil in the Amazon rainforest.
