Jovanka Houska
Jovanka Houska (born 10 June 1980) is an English chess player with the titles International Master (IM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM). She is a nine-time British Women's Chess Champion. Formative years Born in south London, her family name stems from her grandfather who was part Czech. Her first name is typically Slavic, but was chosen only to complement the family name. Chess is a popular sport in the Houska family, and she owes much of her progress to the sibling rivalry that developed with elder brother Miroslav, himself an International Master of chess, though currently inactive. She has a degree in Law. One of England's most active professionals, she first represented her country at the World Youth Championship for Girls (under 10) in Timișoara 1988, finishing fifth after a disastrous start and despite being years younger than most of her opponents. Howard Staunton Memorial Tournament
The Howard Staunton Memorial Tournament was an annual chess tournament held between 2003 and 2009 in honour of the English chess player Howard Staunton (1810–1874). History The first Staunton Memorial tournament was held in 1946 (at Groningen, Mikhail Botvinnik won, half a point ahead of Max Euwe; 20 strong players). This celebrated the 50 years that had passed since the establishment of the Staunton Chess Club in Groningen, and was the first major chess tournament after World War II. A follow-up Groningen 'mini-memorial' was held in 1996 (Vasily Smyslov won) that comprised the seven surviving participants of the 1946 event, and marked the 100th anniversary of the club. Pia Cramling
Pia Ann Rosa-Della Cramling (born 23 April 1963) is a Sweden, Swedish chess player. In 1992, she became the fifth woman to earn the FIDE title of Grandmaster (chess), Grandmaster (GM). Since the early 1980s, she has been one of the strongest female players in the world as well as having been the highest rated woman in the FIDE World Rankings on three occasions. She was the clear number one rated woman in the January 1984 rating list, and joint number one rated woman in the July 1984 list. Career Cramling is, aside from Judit Polgar (who chose not to play in women's events), the only woman to have earned the grandmaster title before 2000 who has never won the Women's World Chess Championship, Women's World Champion crown. MonRoi
MonRoi, Inc. is a Montreal-based company that created a system to allow the recording of chess games in an electronic format. The system also allows for games to be broadcast via MonRoi's World Databank of Chess in realtime, as the games are being played. MonRoi is one of five electronic scorekeeping devices that are approved for use during USCF rated games. The other four are the ''DGT Electronic Chessboard'' the ''eNotate'' computer program running on a Windows Mobile PDA, ''Plycounter'', and ''ChessNoteR'' which uses the Android operating system and repurposes a Motorola Nexus 6 device to deliver its software. The MonRoi system uses the Personal Chess Manager (PCM) to input moves on an electronic screen, similar to PDA's, rather than using the paper score sheet to record moves. Hastings International Chess Congress
The Hastings International Chess Congress is an annual chess tournament which takes place in Hastings, England, around the turn of the year. The main event is the Hastings Premier tournament, which was traditionally a 10 to 16 player round-robin tournament. In 2004/05 the tournament was played in the knock out format; while in 2005/06 and 2006/07 it was played using the Swiss system. Alongside the main event there is the challengers section, which is open to all players. The winner of the challengers event earns an invitation in the following year's Premier. In addition to the annual international tournament at the Christmas Congress, Hastings has also hosted international tournaments at irregular intervals in its Summer Congress. The English Chess Federation (ECF) is the governing chess organisation in England. It is affiliated to FIDE. The ECF was formed in 2004 as one of the more localised successors to the British Chess Federation (BCF), an organisation founded in 1904. The term Chess Bundesliga (german: Schach-Bundesliga) normally refers to the premier league of team chess in Germany established in 1980. It is arguably the strongest league of its kind and attracts many high-rated grandmasters. Austria also has a Bundesliga for chess, usually described as the Bundesliga OST (for Österreich). Format Sixteen teams face each other in a single round robin format, each match-day team formed of eight players. The season runs between October and April. Team members may be male or female, but there is also a separate Bundesliga restricted to female players ("Frauen-Schach-Bundesliga").
