Dragoljub Kosta Jovanovich (January 24, 1916 – November 12, 1983), also known under his pen name D. K. or "Gish" Jovanovich, was a Serbian-American helicopter designer, inventor, and pioneer in autogyro technology. Born in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, he subsequently moved to the United States, living first in Philadelphia and later in southern California. Piasecki and HERC Jovanovich and Frank Kozloski founded the Helicopter Engineering Research Corporation (HERC) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946. HERC was the predecessor of Jovair. Jovanovich and Kozloski previously worked for Piasecki Helicopter Corporation where Jovanovich's patented tandem rotary design was used on the Piasecki PV-3. The McCulloch Model MC-4 was an American tandem-rotor helicopter and was the first helicopter developed by McCulloch Aircraft Corporation, a division of McCulloch Motors Corporation.Harding, Stephen ''U.S. Army Aircraft Since 1947'', Airlife Publishing, Ltd. 1990. El Segundo ( , ; ) is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Frank Kozloski
Frank Kozloski (1916–2003) was an aeronautical engineer who worked on early tandem rotor helicopters and was one of the founders of Piasecki Helicopter's. Kozloski was born in Edwardsville in 1916. His parents were Anthony and Stella Twardowska Kozloski. After graduating from Penn State University, Kozloski worked for Westinghouse in Sharon for a year. He left Westinghouse to study aeronautical engineering at NYU. On graduating in 1940, Kozloski joined Frank Piasecki, F.M.Vinsie, Walt Schwartz, Don Myers, and Elliott Daland who formed their own company where they designed the Piasecki PV-2. He met Drago Jovanovich while working at Piasecki's. On 26 September 1944 he married Bertha S. Anisko and later worked for Kellett Autogiro Corporation in Philadelphia until being drafted into the Navy. __NOTOC__ The McCulloch J-2 was a small, two-seat autogyro with an enclosed cabin, one of only three designs of this type of aircraft to receive a type certificate in the United States. It was built by McCulloch Aircraft Corporation. Design and development It was designed by Drago Jovanovich and first flew in June 1962. McCulloch acquired the design in 1969 and put it into production, building 83 aircraft over the next three years. They were reported to sell for US$15,900. The design featured a belt clutch and a transmission which could be engaged to spin the rotor blades to high speed before take-off to produce short takeoff runs.
