Journal Of Invertebrate Pathology
The ''Journal of Invertebrate Pathology'' is a peer-reviewed scientific journal publishing research on the induction and pathogenesis of diseases of invertebrates, owned by Academic Press (part of Elsevier). The journal publishes the results of physiological, morphological, genetic, immunological, and ecological studies as related to the etiologic agents of diseases of invertebrates, including the suppression of diseases in beneficial species, and the use of diseases in controlling undesirable species. It was founded by American microbiologist Edward Arthur Steinhaus in 1959 as the ''Journal of Insect Pathology'', renamed in 1965, and in 1968 adopted as the official journal of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology shortly after it was also founded by Steinhaus. Invertebrate zoology is the subdiscipline of zoology that consists of the study of invertebrates, animals without a backbone (a structure which is found only in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). Invertebrates are a vast and very diverse group of animals that includes sponges, echinoderms, tunicates, numerous different phyla of worms, molluscs, arthropods and many additional phyla. Arbovirus
Arbovirus is an informal name for any virus that is transmitted by arthropod vectors. The term ''arbovirus'' is a portmanteau word (''ar''thropod-''bo''rne ''virus''). ''Tibovirus'' (''ti''ck-''bo''rne ''virus'') is sometimes used to more specifically describe viruses transmitted by ticks, a superorder within the arthropods. Arboviruses can affect both animals (including humans) and plants. In humans, symptoms of arbovirus infection generally occur 3–15 days after exposure to the virus and last three or four days. The most common clinical features of infection are fever, headache, and malaise, but encephalitis and viral hemorrhagic fever may also occur. Signs and symptoms The incubation period – the time between when infection occurs and when symptoms appear – varies from virus to virus, but is usually limited between 2 and 15 days for arboviruses. Edward Arthur Steinhaus
Edward Arthur Steinhaus (7 November 1914 – 20 October 1969) was an American bacteriologist and pathologist who specialized in insect pathology particularly on the applications of microorganisms for the control of insect pests. He also served as the founder or cofounder of the ''Annual Review of Entomology'', the ''Journal of Invertebrate Pathology'', and the Society for Invertebrate Pathology. Steinhaus was born in Max, North Dakota to Alice Rinehart and Arthur Alfred. He studied in Faribault, Minnesota and worked with a printer to produce a private periodical. An interest in microbes was sparked off after reading Paul de Kruif's ''Microbe Hunter''. He joined North Dakota Agricultural College in 1932 with bacteriology as a major and then moved to Ohio State University, receiving a doctorate in 1939. Pathology is the study of the causes and effects of disease or injury. The word ''pathology'' also refers to the study of disease in general, incorporating a wide range of biology research fields and medical practices.
