François Jouffroy
François Jouffroy (1 February 1806 – 25 June 1882) was a French sculptor. Biography Jouffroy was born in Dijon, France, the son of a baker, and attended the local drawing school before being admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1824. In 1832 he won the Prix de Rome. Jouffroy often had to compete with Pierre-Jean David d'Angers for public commissions, but during the Second Empire (1851–1870) he still participated in the decoration of several public buildings. He was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1865 until his death. Among his students were Per Hasselberg, Jean Dampt, Léopold Morice, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, José Simões de Almeida (Tio), António Soares dos Reis, Elisa de Lamartine, and Adrien Étienne Gaudez. Théodore Simon Jouffroy
Théodore Simon Jouffroy (6 July 17964 February 1842) was a French philosopher. Biography He was born at Les Pontets, Franche-Comté, département of Doubs. In his tenth year, his father, a tax-gatherer, sent him to an uncle at Pontarlier, under whom he began his classical studies. At Dijon his compositions attracted the attention of an inspector, who had him placed (1814) in the normal school, Paris. There he came under the influence of Victor Cousin, and in 1817 he was appointed assistant professor of philosophy at the normal and Bourbon schools. Three years later, being thrown upon his own resources, he began a course of lectures in his own house, and formed literary connexions with '' Le Courrier français'', ''Le Globe'', ''L'Encyclopédie moderne'', and ''La Revue européenne''. Jean Jouffroy
Jean Jouffroy (c. 1412–1473) was a French prelate and diplomat. He was born at Luxeuil-les-Bains (Haute-Saône). After entering the Benedictine order and teaching at the university of Pavia from 1435 to 1438, he became almoner to Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy, who entrusted him with diplomatic missions in France, Italy, Portugal and Castile. Jouffroy was appointed abbot of Luxeuil (1451?), bishop of Arras (1453), and papal legate (1459). At the French court his diplomatic duties brought him to the notice of the dauphin (afterwards Louis XI). Jouffroy entered Louis's service, and obtained a cardinal's hat (1461), the bishopric of Albi (1462), and the abbacy of St Denis (1464). There was resistance from other cardinals to his being given a red hat by Pope Pius II, but the pope insisted. Alain Jouffroy (11 September 1928 – 20 December 2015) was a French writer, poet and artist. Jouffroy was born near Parc Montsouris, Paris. He was the first advocate of an Art Strike and formed the L'Union des Ecrivains during the strikes of May 1968 in France with Jean-Pierre Faye. Claude-François-Dorothée, Marquis De Jouffroy D'Abbans
Claude-François-Dorothée, marquis de Jouffroy d'Abbans (30 September 1751 - 18 July 1832) was a French naval architect and engineer. He was the inventor of the first steamboat, leading to the first industrial revolution by launching a new dynamic on the waters of the globe. In 1773, Jouffroy d'Abbans met with the Perier brothers and studied in their workshop the ' (Fire pump), which had been used as a motive force for the hydraulic machine developed by Chaillot, in order to apply it to ship propulsion. In 1776, Jouffroy d'Abbans developed a 13-meter steamship, the '' Palmipède'', in which the engine moved oars equipped with rotating blades. The ship sailed on the Doubs in June and July 1776. In 1783, he made a paddle steamer named the ''Pyroscaphe'' ply on the Saône.
