José Velásquez (explorer)
José Velásquez (1717–1785) was a Spanish soldier who served in Baja California, Mexico, and in Alta California, leading notable exploring expeditions and describing the region in his diaries and reports. Biography Velásquez was born in San Ildefonso de Ostimuri, Sonora. In 1751, he enlisted as a private in the military forces based at Loreto, Baja California Sur, under the administration of the Jesuit missionaries. When the Jesuits were expelled from Baja California and the Franciscans and the government of New Spain assumed responsibility for the peninsula in 1768, Velásquez was promoted to the rank of corporal. He apparently travelled with the Portolà expedition, first overland party to San Diego and Monterey in Alta California in 1769-1770. Velásquez served under Fernando Rivera y Moncada, second in command of the expedition. José Manuel Velásquez Castillo (born 4 June 1952 in Lima) is a retired Peruvian footballer who played as a midfielder. Nicknamed "El Patrón", he stood out for his elegance, presence, courage and technical play, being recognized as one of the players with the most personality that Peruvian football has given and the best defensive midfielder in the history of his country. He was nominated for the Global Ballon d'Or by FIFA in 1977. José Antonio Velásquez (1906–1983) was a self-taught Honduran painter. His work can be seen at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C. José Antonio Velásquez was known as a "Primitivist" painter who depicted Honduran landscapes and street scenes. Biography Antonio Velásquez was born in Valle in Honduras on February 8, 1906. He moved to San Antonio de Oriente around 1930. That region and its vivid rural life provided the subject matter for many of the artist's paintings. He worked various trades, including as a barber and telegraph operator. Both the residents of San Antonio de Oriente and Hondurans at broad held great acclaim for José Antonio Velásquez. He died of a heart attack in 1983 in Tegucigalpa. Honduran intellectuals such as Filadelfo Suazo memorialized Antonio Velásquez in poems and newspaper articles after his death. José Manuel "Sema" Velázquez Rodríguez, (born 8 September 1990) is a Venezuelan professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Liga Portugal 2 club Santa Clara and the Venezuela national team.
