José Vargas (basketball)
José Luis Vargas, commonly known as "El Grillo" (born June 23, 1963), is a Dominican former professional basketball player. College career Vargas played college basketball for Louisiana State University. Professional career Vargas was drafted in the second round of the 1988 National Basketball Association Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. He never played in the NBA, though, instead leaving to play in the Italian league. He played for Maccabi Tel Aviv from 1991-1993. The center (C), or the centre, also known as the five or the pivot, is one of the five Basketball position, positions in a regulation basketball game. The center is normally the tallest player on the team, and often has a great deal of strength and body mass as well. In the NBA, the center is typically close to tall. They traditionally play close to the basket in the low post. Centers are valued for their ability to protect their own goal from high-percentage close attempts on defense, while scoring and rebounding with high efficiency on offense. In the 1950s and 1960s, George Mikan and Bill Russell were centerpieces of championship dynasties and defined early prototypical centers.
