José Pérez (baseball)
José Pérez (September 2, 1898 – death unknown), nicknamed "Pepín", was a Cuban first baseman in the Negro leagues and the Cuban League in the 1920s and 1930s. A native of Marianao, Cuba, Pérez made his Negro leagues debut in 1922 for the Cuban Stars (East), and played the majority of his career with the club. He also played two seasons with the Harrisburg Giants in 1926 and 1927, and played multiple seasons in the Cuban League with Almendares, Marianao, and the Leopardos de Santa Clara. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. Flexibility is needed because the first baseman receives throws from the other infielders, the catcher and the pitcher after they have fielded ground balls. Leopardos De Santa Clara
The Leopardos de Santa Clara (Spanish, 'Santa Clara Leopards') were a Cuban professional baseball team based in Santa Clara, Cuba. Founded in 1922, they played in the Cuban League from 1922 to 1925, from 1929 to 1930, and from 1935 to 1941. Although they competed for only 11 seasons, they won league championships in four regular seasons and in one "special season." According to Cuban League historian Jorge S. Figueredo, the 1923/24 team, which went 36–11 and won the championship by games, is "considered as the most dominant team in the history of Cuban baseball." During their existence, the Leopardos featured several of the biggest stars of Negro league baseball, including Oscar Charleston, Satchel Paige, and Josh Gibson. Marianao (Cuban League Baseball Club)
The Marianao baseball club played in the Cuban Professional League from the 1922–1923 season through to the 1960–1961 season. The club represented the populous town of Marianao in Havana and played their games at La Tropicana Stadium, official site of the league. History According to some baseball historians, the Elefantes de Marianao (Marianao Elephants) was the first nickname used by the team. Although it is a little studied topic, the 1923-24 Billiken baseball card set includes pictures 15 cards each for each team that participated in the Cuban league during that season: Almendares, Habana, Santa Clara and Marianao. Marianao, Cuba
Marianao is one of the 15 municipalities or boroughs ('' municipios'' in Spanish) in the city of Havana, Cuba. It lies 6 miles southwest of the original city of Havana, with which it is connected by the Marianao railway. In 1989 the municipality had a population of 133,016. Marianao is on a range of hills of about 1500 above sea level and is noted for its salubrious climate. The city dates back to 1830.
