José Dias Coelho
José Dias Coelho (1923 in Pinhel – 1961 in Lisbon) was a Portuguese painter and sculptor, an anti-fascist and an important member of the Portuguese Communist Party. In his youth, José Dias Coelho joined the Antifascist Academic Front. Later on, as a student of the Art Academy of Lisbon, he was a member of the Juvenile MUD. In 1947 he participated in a great number of student demonstrations and actively pressed for the creation of an Academic Association in the Art Academy and against the 1952 NATO meeting in Lisbon. As a consequence of this action, he was expelled from the Art Academy, prohibited to enroll in any other faculty of the country and dismissed from his teaching position in the technical section of the educational system. He joined the Portuguese Communist Party in his early twenties and soon became an important member of the party's clandestine net that struggled against the Fascists. José Dias de Melo (April 8, 1925 in Calheta de Nesquim, Lajes - September 24, 2008 in São José (Ponta Delgada), Ponta Delgada), was an Azorean author and writer. Biography He studied in the city of Horta, in the local lyceum and primary educational institution, but eventually settled in Ponta Delgada after 1949 where he was to marry and begin a family. He completed his courses in teaching in Ponta Delgada, and became a teacher in a preparatory institution before moving on to teach in Cova da Piedade (1976–1977) and Lajes do Pico (1978–1979). While in Horta he worked for the regional newspapers, including the regional newspapers ''O Telegrafo'', ''Açores'', and ''Ilha'', and the national media ''Diário de Notícias'' and ''Diário de Lisboa''; during his time in Horta, with other school colleagues, he helped found the Associação Cultural Académica ("Academic Cultural Association") in November, 1944. José Simões Dias (1844 in Benfeita, Arganil – 3 March 1899 in Lisbon) was a Portuguese poet, short-story writer and literary critic, as well as politician and pedagogue. His poetry is generally affiliated with the later Romantic tradition, sometimes termed Ultra-Romanticism, although some of his poems, popular in tone, can be seen to betray an affinity for the Realist aesthetics that was then beginning to blossom in Portuguese letters.
