José Dapena Laguna
José Nazario Dapena Laguna, (28 July 1912 – 20 September 1991) was a Puerto Rican attorney and Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1956. Early years José Dapena Laguna was born in Ponce on 28 July 1912. His parents were Ramon Dapena Pacheco and Maria Laguna y Cedo. He was the father of José Dapena Thompson, mayor of Ponce from 1984 to 1988. Political life In 1941 he worked as a political aide in the Ponce City Hall, and was also interim municipal secretary. In 1956, he was appointed mayor of Ponce. Later that year (1956) he resigned as mayor to become a member of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico, a post for which he had been elected. José Joaquin Dapena Thompson (born c. 1938), known as Josito, was a Puerto Rican politician and Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico from 22 February 1984 to 1988. Schooling Dapena graduated from the University of Salamanca, Spain, in 1965. He practiced law in the island until he got involved in politics. In 1984, he defeated the candidate from the PPD by a narrow margin for the position of Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Mayoral term Dapena Thompson became mayor of Ponce on 22 February 1984 upon the resignation as mayor of Jose G. Tormos Vega on that day. Later, in October of that year, he became ''bona fide'' mayor via the electoral vote. In the interim, Ruben Quinones, the Ponce Municipal Secretary, was the acting mayor. Andrés Grillasca Salas (6 January 1888 – 19 December 1973) was a Puerto Rican farmer from Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, and Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 2 January 1941 to 9 May 1956. Until the 1990s administration of Rafael Cordero Santiago, Grillasca Salas had the distinction of being the longest-serving mayor of the city (16 years). This is a list of mayors of Ponce, Puerto Rico's southern economic center, the island's second largest and second most important city.
