José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation is a private, charitable and non-profitable organization, founded by the tenor José Carreras following his recovery. Carreras founded the Foundation on July 14, 1988, with one single objective: that leukaemia will one day be 100% curable. He wanted to make a permanent testimony to science and society to show his gratitude for the support he received throughout his illness. After that, other branches of the Josep Carreras Foundation against Leukemia were formed in the United States, Switzerland and Germany. José Carreras
Josep Maria Carreras Coll (; born 5 December 1946), better known as José Carreras (, ), is a Spanish operatic tenor who is particularly known for his performances in the operas of Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini. Born in Barcelona, he made his debut on the operatic stage at 11 as Trujamán in Manuel de Falla's ''El retablo de Maese Pedro'', and went on to a career that encompassed over 60 roles, performing in the world's leading opera houses and on numerous recordings. He gained fame with a wider audience as one of the Three Tenors, with Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, in a series of large concerts from 1990 to 2003. Leukemia ( also spelled leukaemia and pronounced ) is a group of blood cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal blood cells. Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the transplantation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, usually derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood in order to replicate inside of a patient and to produce additional normal blood cells.
