José Carlos Capinam
José Carlos Capinam (born 19 February 1941), better known as Capinam or Capinan, is a Brazilian lyricist and poet. He was active in Brazil's tropicália movement in the 1960s, and he wrote lyrics for various tropicália musicians. Biography Born in Esplanada, Bahia, Brazil, at 19 years of age, Capinam moved to Salvador, Bahia and attended the Federal University of Bahia where he studied law. At university, he was a member of the União Nacional dos Estudantes (National Student Union), and he befriended musicians Gilberto Gil (who was studying business) and Caetano Veloso (who was studying philosophy). The 1964 military coup d'état forced him to leave Salvador, and he relocated to São Paulo. In São Paulo he worked on poems for his first book, ''Inquisitórial''. Eventually he returned to Salvador, this time to study medicine. Tropicália
Tropicália (), also known as Tropicalismo (), was a Brazilian artistic movement that arose in the late 1960s. It was characterized by the amalgamation of Brazilian genres—notably the union of the pop culture, popular and the avant-garde, as well as the melding of Brazilian tradition and foreign traditions and styles. Today, Tropicália is chiefly associated with the musical faction of the movement, which merged Music of Brazil, Brazilian and Music of Africa, African rhythms with British and American psychedelic music, psychedelia and pop rock. The movement also included works of film, theatre, and poetry. Caetano Veloso (1969 Album)
''Caetano Veloso'' (a.k.a. ''Álbum Branco'', which means ''White Album'', in Portuguese) is an album released in Brazil in 1969, being the third album by Caetano Veloso, his second solo. The album vocals and acoustic guitars were recorded in a small recording studio in Salvador, where Veloso was confined for defying the authoritarian Brazilian government of the time. He recorded the vocals, and Gilberto Gil the acoustic guitar, which were sent to arranger and producer Rogério Duprat, who added layers of electric guitars, horns, bass, drums and other instruments in a more professional studio in São Paulo. The album, like its predecessor, is very eclectic (a characteristic of the Tropicália movement), with songs that vary from Bossa Nova, Psychedelic rock, Carnival music, traditional Bahian music, Fado, Tango, and others. Paulinho da Viola (born Paulo César Batista de Faria on 12 November 1942) () is a Brazilian '' sambista'', singer-songwriter, guitar, cavaquinho and mandolin player, known for his sophisticated harmonies and soft, gentle singing voice. Caetano Veloso (1968 Album)
''Caetano Veloso'' is the debut solo album by the artist of the same name, released in Brazil in 1968. He had released ''Domingo'' the year before in collaboration with Gal Costa. It was one of the first Tropicália efforts, and features arrangements by Júlio Medaglia, Damiano Cozzella, and Sandino Hohagen, as well as an eclectic assortment of influences, demonstrating the " antropofagia" (artistic cannibalism) of the Tropicália movement. Sounds from psychedelia, rock, pop, Indian music, bossa nova, Bahian music and other genres appear on the album. It includes the hit songs "Alegria, Alegria", "Tropicália", and "Soy loco por ti, América".
