José Carlos Martins Ferreira (born 2 August 1966), known as José Carlos, is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a right back. He started his career with Benfica, where he won four major titles, representing four more teams in the Primeira Liga and amassing totals of 364 matches and 15 goals over 15 seasons. Club career Born in Lisbon, José Carlos started at local Desportivo Domingos Sávio at age 12, finishing his development at neighbouring S.L. Benfica. In his first two seasons as a professional he did not made a league appearance, as manager John Mortimore favoured António Veloso for the position. The 1989 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira was the 11th edition of the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, the annual Portuguese football season-opening match contested by the winners of the previous season's top league and cup competitions (or cup runner-up in case the league- and cup-winning club is the same). In sport, a cap is a player's appearance in a game at international level. The term dates from the practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap to every player in an international match of rugby football and association football. In the early days of football, the concept of each team wearing a set of matching shirts had not been universally adopted, so each side would distinguish itself from the other by wearing a specific sort of cap. An early illustration of the first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872 shows the Scottish players wearing cowls, and the English wearing a variety of school caps. 1999–2000 Primeira Liga
The 1999–2000 Primeira Liga was the 66th season of top-tier football in Portugal. The competition was renamed Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Liga (National Championship of the First League), Primeira Liga for short, after the Portuguese League for Professional Football took control of the two top nationwide leagues in 1999. It started on 20 August 1999 and ended on 14 May 2000. The league was contested by 18 clubs with Porto as the defending champions. Sporting won their first Championship in 18 years (since 1981–82) and qualified for the 2000–01 UEFA Champions League first group stage, along with Porto, who qualified for the third qualifying round. The 1997–98 Primeira Divisão was the 64th edition of top flight of Portuguese football. It started on 25 August 1997 with a match between Varzim and Porto, and ended on 17 May 1998. The league was contested by 18 clubs with Porto as the defending champions. Fernando Mendes (footballer, Born 1966)
Fernando Manuel Antunes Mendes (born 5 November 1966) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a left back. Club career Mendes was born in Setúbal. Having been brought up at Sporting CP's youth system at the same time as Paulo Futre, he made his first-team debut in 1984–85 aged 18, and reached the Portugal national team shortly after. In the following seasons he started regularly for the ''Lions'', but they only won one trophy. In 1989, Mendes joined Sporting's rivals S.L. Benfica, being sparingly used over three years – in between, he spent one season at Boavista F.C. – winning the Taça de Portugal in his last one, where he teamed up with Futre. António Manuel Tavares "Tony" Fonseca (born 30 January 1965) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a left back, and a technical director for the Canadian Soccer Association. Abel Luís da Silva Costa Xavier (; born 30 November 1972) is a Portuguese football manager and former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Abel Jorge Pereira da Silva, CvIH (born 21 August 1969), sometimes known as just Abel, is a Portuguese former footballer. The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) is an international organization dedicated to collecting statistics about association football. The foundation aims to build an exhaustive archive of football-related information from around the world.
