José Antonio Maravall
José Antonio Maravall Casesnoves (1911 in Xàtiva – 1986 in Madrid) was a Spanish historian and essayist associated with the Generation of '36 movement. Biography Maravall studied philosophy and law at the University of Murcia, where he completed his final degree in political science and economics at the Central University, where he was a student of Jose Ortega y Gasset. He became a university professor in Spain and abroad. Maravall was head of the department at the University of La Laguna and the Complutense University of Madrid. He also became a member of the Real Academia de la Historia and the president of the Spanish Association of Historical Sciences. In Francoist Spain Maravall avoided some of the more politically sensitive topics of his work. He wrote poetry during this period, and co-founded the ''Nueva Revista'' ("New Magazine") literary review with José Antonio Muñoz Rojas and Leopoldo Panero. Felipe González Márquez (; born 5 March 1942) is a retired Spanish politician who was Prime Minister of Spain from 1982 to 1996 and leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party from 1974 to 1997. He is the longest-serving democratically-elected Prime Minister of Spain. González joined the PSOE in 1964 when it was banned under the Francoist regime. José María Maravall Herrero, FBA (Madrid, 1942) is a Spanish academic and a politician of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. Education Maravall holds doctorates from both the Complutense University of Madrid and Oxford University, as well as a Honorary D.Litt. from Warwick University. Career Maravall was, until his retirement, the director of the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences ( CEACS -Juan March Institute in Madrid) and a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. He has taught at the University of Warwick and, as a visiting professor, at the universities of New York (NYU), Columbia, Harvard, and the European University Institute (Florence).
