Joskeleigh Cemetery
Joskeleigh Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery at Joskeleigh Road, Joskeleigh, Shire of Livingstone, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1890s to 1900s. It is also known as Sandhills Historical South Sea Islander Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The use of the area that became the Joskeleigh Cemetery was established on privately owned land at Sandhills/Joskeleigh by the late 1890s/early 1900s by the local South Sea Islander community. By 1983 there were fifth-generation descendants of the original cane workers brought to the Rockhampton district in the late 19th century living in the Joskeleigh area. In the period 1863–1904, South Sea Islanders were the principal labour force in Queensland's sugar industry, and until about 1880 also worked in the pastoral and maritime industries. Joskeleigh is a coastal rural locality in the Livingstone Shire, Queensland, Australia. In the , Joskeleigh had a population of 70 people. Geography The waters of the ''Coral Sea'' form the eastern boundary. History Joskeleigh Provisional School opened on 28 October 1913 in a church building, pending the erection of a school building, under head teacher Frederick Vespermann. There was an average of 21 students in 1913. In 1918 it became Joskeleigh State School. It closed on 29 April 1985 due to falling enrolments. It was at 356 Joskeleigh Road (). Sandhills Post Office opened on 24 December 1923 (a receiving office had been open from 1898, named Fishergate until 1908) and closed in 1937. The Pacific Island Labourers Act 1901 was an Act of the Parliament of Australia which was designed to facilitate the mass deportation of nearly all the Pacific Islanders (called "Kanakas") working in Australia, especially in the Queensland sugar industry. Along with the Immigration Restriction Act 1901, enacted six days later, it formed an important part of the White Australia policy. The Shire of Livingstone is a local government area located in the Capricornia region of Central Queensland, Queensland, Australia, to the immediate north and east of the regional city of Rockhampton.
