Joshua Mays
Joshua Mays (born c.1976) is an American painter, illustrator, and muralist. His work, which typically features black subjects in fantastical settings, is considered by many to be an example of Afrofuturism, although he does not use the label to describe himself. He was born in Denver, and is now based in Oakland. Work Mays is self-taught and sold his first commissioned piece in high school. He names album cover artist Mati Klarwein as an influence, and he has done album art for Jneiro Jarel and Jill Scott. Mays's murals include the "BEACON" series, which is based on a quote by Maya Angelou: “If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities.” This series consists of murals in Oakland at 23rd Avenue and 24th Street, 829 Vermont St., West Oakland, and 1700 Broadway. Afrofuturism
Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic, and philosophy of science and history that explores the intersection of the African diaspora culture with science and technology. It addresses themes and concerns of the African diaspora through technoculture and speculative fiction, encompassing a range of media and artists with a shared interest in envisioning black futures that stem from Afro-diasporic experiences. While Afrofuturism is most commonly associated with science fiction, it can also encompass other speculative genres such as fantasy, alternate history, and magic realism. The term was coined by Mark Dery, an American Cultural critic in 1993 and explored in the late 1990s through conversations led by Alondra Nelson. Ytasha L. My Brother's Keeper Challenge
My Brother's Keeper Challenge is a public–private partnership of the United States federal government which promotes intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color. The program was initiated in 2014 with sponsorship of the White House, the United States Department of Education, and the National Convening Council. The initiative obtained pledges by non-profit organizations of $200 million over five years. The initiative was intended to be a call to action for mayors, Native American tribal leaders, county executives, and other municipal leaders to address persistent opportunity gaps for young men of color and help them reach their potential. African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans and Afro-Americans) are an ethnic group consisting of Americans with partial or total ancestry from sub-Saharan Africa. Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith
Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith (born January 13, 1991) is an American artist based in Oakland, California. She is known for her large-scale murals, and she is also the creative director of the Bay Area Mural Program. Works During the spring and summer of 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, Wolfe-Goldsmith was among the many artists who painted murals in response to the killing on pieces of plywood covering storefronts in downtown Oakland. Her piece on 15th St. is called ''We Can Breathe''. During this time, the Bay Area Mural Program, with Wolfe-Goldsmith as creative director, and African American Arts & Culture Complex organized the Black Lives Matter mural in San Francisco, which ran for three city blocks.
