Joshua Chaytor
Captain Joshua David Gerald Chaytor (13 May 1903 – 4 March 1937) was an Irish-born cricketer. A right-handed batsman and right-arm fast-medium bowler, he played first-class cricket in the 1924 English cricket season and also represented the Egypt national cricket team. Biography Born at Knockmaroon House, County Dublin, Ireland in 1903, he was the son of a stockbroker, Joshua David Chaytor (1862–1908) and his wife Lucy Sophia Norris. Educated at Wellington College, Joshua Chaytor played his one first-class match in June 1924, representing the Free Foresters against Cambridge University. Later in the year he played for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against his native Ireland. In April 1933 he played for Egypt against HM Martineau's XI, top-scoring with 41 in the second innings. Marylebone Cricket Club
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. When the ICC was established in 1909, it was administered by the secretary of the MCC, and the president of MCC automatically assumed the chairmanship of ICC until 1989. For much of the 20th century, commencing with the 1903–04 tour of Australia and ending with the 1976–77 tour of India, MCC organised international tours on behalf of the England cricket team for playing Test matches. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. ''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'', or simply ''Wisden'', colloquially the Bible of Cricket, is a cricket reference book published annually in the United Kingdom. The description "bible of cricket" was first used in the 1930s by Alec Waugh in a review for the ''London Mercury''. Polo is a ball game played on horseback, a traditional field sport and one of the world's oldest known team sports. An innings is one of the divisions of a cricket match during which one team takes its turn to bat. Innings also means the period in which an individual player bats (acts as either striker or nonstriker). Innings, in cricket, and rounders, is both singular and plural; this contrasts with baseball and softball in which the singular is "inning". Hubert Martineau
Hubert Melville Martineau (24 October 1891 – 11 September 1976) was an English patron of cricket and organiser of his own team.Wisden Cricketers' Almanack 1977Obituaries in 1976 He also played three first-class matches between 1931 and 1932. When he played, he was a right-handed batsman and left-arm orthodox spin bowler. Biography Born in Westminster in 1891, the son of Sir Philip Martineau, Hubert Martineau was educated at Eton, though he did not play for the school's cricket team. He did however develop a great love of the game. Club cricket of a high standard was played at his private ground near Maidenhead between 1923 and 1939, and four national sides touring England began their tours playing against his personal XI; Australia in 1926, New Zealand in 1927, the West Indies in 1928 and India in 1932.
